Michael C. Hall Will Kill Once Again In ‘Dexter: Resurrection’

Dexter's Dark Passenger Will Return

Showtime’s award-winning drama series Dexter is expanding not only with a prequel but also with a sequel series as well.

Original Sin

In January 2023, it was announced that a prequel series was in development, centered around a young Dexter Morgan. The prequel show, titled Dexter: Original Sin, follows the young serial killer as his adoptive father Detective Harry Morgan teaches him a strict code to live by, one that shapes Dexter when he is hunting murderers. While trying to avoid getting caught, the young Dexter begins his forensics internship with the Miami Metro Police Department.

Clyde Phillips, showrunner for the first four seasons of the original run of Dexter, is serving as showrunner on the prequel, and starring as the young Dexter Morgan is Patrick Gibson. Dexter isn’t the only character showcasing a younger version of themself. Christian Slater will portray Harry Morgan, Molly Brown will be Debra Morgan, Christina Millian will be Maria LaGuerta, and James Martinez will portray Angel Batista. Also joining the cast is Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey. It has also been revealed that Michael C. Hall will be returning to lend his voice to the inner mind of the young vigilante serial killer. Dexter: Original Sin will premiere in December 2024.

Resurrecting a Killer

It seems strange to do a sequel series to Dexter, given how Dexter: New Blood chose to end the character. Despite Dexter’s fate at the end of the limited series, showtime is producing a follow-up titled Dexter: Resurrection.

“We are thrilled to have the brilliant Michael C. Hall reprise his iconic role as Dexter Morgan in Showtime’s most successful series ever,” said Paramount Global Co-CEO, Chris McCarthy. “While Dexter: Resurrection will appeal to the tens of millions of longtime fans, Dexter: Original Sin will introduce a whole new generation of viewers into this iconic series by starting from the beginning, which is sure to satisfy existing audiences as well.”

Little is known about Dexter: Resurrection, such as plot details, casting, and production. It is yet to be revealed which returning cast members will appear, such as Jennifer Carpenter as Debra Morgan or Dexter’s son, Harrison. Based on the ending of New Blood, it can be assumed that Carpenter will return, as well as David Zayas as Angel Batista. However, explaining how Dexter Morgan will return is possibly the biggest question mark regarding the series. Audiences will have to wait until the series premiers in the summer of 2025.

Showtime’s ‘Dexter’

Based on the 2004 novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, the first of the supernatural horror series that served as the basis for Showtime’s Dexter. The show is very loosely based on the books, starring Michael C. Hall as the vigilante serial killer who carefully chooses his victims, typically murderers and other serial killers. The series was extremely successful and aired for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013 on Showtime. Even the opening credits to the show won an Emmy in 2007 for Outstanding Main Title Design.

However, in 2021 the sequel series Dexter: New Blood was met with mixed reactions and an even more abrupt ending with one season of the limited series which left the show, and possibly the showrunners, in an unsatisfied place. Dexter: Resurrection and Dexter: Original Sin will hopefully bring the anti-serial killer back to the level of the original show, satisfying fans and possibly bringing future seasons if it performs well.

Dexter is available to stream on the Roku channel.
