Scream Queen Takes On A Fundamentalist Cult
Fans can rejoice at the announcement that Azrael, with star Samara Weaving, will be premiering in theaters this fall. As Deadline previously reported, IFC Films and Shudder are distributing this project. Moreover, Shudder will showcase the horror on its platform before 2024 closes.
Australian TV Star to International Scream Queen
Collider reports that longtime fans of Weaving will recognize her from her native Australian TV scene in Out of the Blue and Home and Away. After this success, she set her sights on the North American film market with her debut in Monster Trucks. Then, she appeared in several international blockbusters like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Nine Perfect Strangers, Bill and Ted Face the Music, and Babylon. Beyond hit films, she’s a renowned Scream Queen with notable performances in Ready or Not, Mayhem, The Babysitter, Scream 6, and Ash vs. Evil Dead. Now, fans can see her again in a post-apocalyptic horror.
A Post-Apocalyptic Landscape Void Of Talking
According to Collider, the post-apocalyptic thriller is set in a landscape void of talking, where one woman, Azrael (Samara Weaving), flees the confines of the community but is quickly captured. Shortly after that, she faces the unfortunate consequences of her escape — the evil cultists plan to use her as a sacrifice to the mysterious entity lurking in the dense forest. The leaders, however, underestimate Azrael’s will to fight back.
The twisted psychological thriller comes via the directing prowess of E.L. Katz with the script penned by Simon Barrett (You’re Next). Previously, Katz’s most notable projects were Drafthouse Films and Snoot Entertainment-born Cheap Thrills as well as the Netflix hit: Small Crimes. However, Katz isn’t just limited to the big screen, as his IMDb page demonstrates that he’s been at the forefront of TV series like Scream: The TV Series, Swamp Thing, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Channel Zero.

‘Uncompromising Genre’ Film
For this recent venture — E.L. Katz needed the support of Shudder/IFC to get this ‘uncompromising genre’ film off the ground. Moreover, in an interview with Collider, the director said, ‘I couldn’t be more thrilled to have Azrael released by our good friends at Shudder/IFC. Their support of wild, uncompromising genre films is unparalleled. We are so excited to invite all horror fans along for this mysterious, gruesome, hellish, Samara Weaving ass-kicking marathon.’
Beyond Katz and his directorial mastery, additional talent to the project is brought by producers Dan Kagan (Longlegs), Dave Caplan (Longlegs), and Barrett who also acts as a writer. Further support for helping this film achieve a wide theatrical release comes through the financiers overseeing the international sales scene: C2 Motion Picture Group and North Five Six.
Next month Azrael will be released at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival, and then it will get a wide theatrical showing on September 27. Finally, Shudder will feature it on its platform in time to close out the year.
