‘28 Years Later’ Director Shares Update on the Film

Good News for the Third Installment in the Franchise

Following the announcement of the franchise’s third installment, director Danny Boyle shared that the sequel to 28 Weeks Later has wrapped production.  The upcoming sequel aims to wrap up the trilogy, the other movies being 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. The film has been able to assemble a star-studded cast as well as some well-known crew members, all on a budget of $60 million. Production began in May of this year and seems to have gone quite well.

The Spark that Lit the Trilogy Aflame

The first installment in the franchise turned out to be a success amongst horror fans when it was released in 2002. The film follows a bike courier who wakes up from a coma to find that the city he resides in has been overrun by a virus, turning people into zombies. With Danny Boyle at the helm and Alex Garland as the writer by his side, the film received favorable ratings from critics as well. The star of the original, Cillian Murphy, has come a long way since his role in the franchise, with the triumphant Best Actor win at the Oscars. He will be returning to star in this third installment.

The second film received less critical acclaim, but not by too much. It was still received moderately well amongst audiences, and it was surrounded more on the efforts from military forces to contain the virus and get civilians to safety. This film starred recognizable names such as Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, and Jeremy Renner. Although it wasn’t as well-received as the original, enough time has passed to give it another shot, and fans seem to be excited for the film’s release.

Current Info on the Upcoming Sequel

Info on the film’s plot is scarce, and nothing is really known outside of the production status and the star-studded cast. As mentioned before, Cillian Murphy returns for the third installment, alongside other acclaimed actors like Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Boyle and Garland return to direct and produce together. Ultimately, promotional material beyond production status should start to find its way out to the public.

28 Years Later is set to release June 20, 2025.
