STARZ and Ella Purnell (Fallout) are back working together again six years after Purnell starred in another “sweet” series, Sweetbitter, in 2018. This time, Purnell joins STARZ as an executive producer and the murderous lead star in Sweetpea.
A Coming-of-Rage Series
Based on C.J. Skuse’s cult novel of the same title, Sweetpea has dropped its first teaser trailer. Produced by See-Saw Films, Sweetpea is a six-part STARZ original series. Award-winning director Ella Jones (Enterprice) directs the series written by Kirstie Swain (Eve), Krissie Ducker (Killing Eve), Laura Jayne Tunbridge (Nights), and Selina Lim (Sex Education). Swain also serves as an executive producer for the series alongside Jones and Purnell.
In the series, “Rhiannon Lewis doesn’t make much of an impression – people walk past her in the street without a second glance. She’s continually overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, and her dad is really, really sick. Then everything in her life turns upside down. Rhiannon is pushed over the edge and loses control. Suddenly the wallflower is gone, and in its place is a young woman capable of anything… Rhiannon’s life transforms as she steps into a new, intoxicating power, but can she keep her killer secret?”
Purnell stars as Rhiannon, a wallflower with a taste for murder. Joining Purnell on the cast includes Nicôle Lecky (Sense8) as Julia, Calam Lynch (Bridgerton) as AJ, Jon Pointing (Big Boys) as Craig, Dustin Demri-Burns (Slow Horses) as Jeff, Leah Harvey (Foundation) as Marina, and Jeremy Swift (Ted Lasso) as Norman.
Purnell’s Latest Success
Purnell has been rising in popularity since her starring role in Fallout. Known for that role along with her previous roles in Yellowjackets, Sweetbitter, and Arcane, Purnell has been turning heads with her acting.
In a press statement, Purnell spoke about her excitement for the series and how she felt playing Rhiannon. “I truly cannot wait for the world to meet Sweetpea! I’ve loved exploring this incredibly complex character, as well as working alongside our dynamic cast and powerhouses Ella Jones, Kristie Swain, and Patrick Walters. This has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career so far,” Purnell said. “At its core, the series is about a woman finally finding her voice, told through a uniquely dark and comedic lens. I hope audiences have as much fun going on Rhiannon Lewis’ wild, coming-of-rage journey as we did bringing it to life.”
Sweetpea will premiere on STARZ in October.
