The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 (2024) Official Prime Video Trailer
A Financial Look at the Iconic Trilogy
In Andy Cohen’s popular television segment “Plead the Fifth,” Cate Blanchett was asked recently which of her roles yielded the biggest payday. Most Lord of the Rings fans were surprised to learn the classic trilogy paled in comparison to her other earnings.
The Numbers
Despite the revelation of low pay for the cast, The Lord of the Rings original trilogy’s success is no secret. The saga concluded in 2003 with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide across all three movies. When adjusted for inflation, the figure is just over $5 billion. Although the production had to be conscious of spending, the estimated budgets for the films totaled over $281 million. The outstanding success of the trilogy rendered an approximate profit of almost 1000%. Blanchett joked about essentially being paid in free sandwiches and added that director Peter Jackson drew her to the project.
The Cast
Almost all of the cast involved in The Lord of the Rings trilogy went on to enjoy or continue illustrious careers. Among such stars are Elija Wood, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Sean Astin, and Viggo Mortensen. The actors are estimated to have a total net worth of $170 million, with Sir Ian McKellen leading the pack at $60 million. Cate Blanchett is reported to have a net worth higher than each, with $95 million. Despite Elijah Wood’s top billing, he received $250,000 for the first installment of the saga. Due to the success of the films, Wood eventually saw his salary increase to $1 million while the movies were still being released. Interestingly, Andy Serkis, who portrayed Gollum, began production receiving a $1 million salary. Serkis was already well-established as a diverse actor in film, television, and theater by the time he was cast for his role in The Lord of the Rings.
The second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, will premiere August 29 on Prime Video.
