People We Meet On Vacation (2021) Official The Hollywood Reporter Cast Announcement
Big Screen And Small Screen Adaptations Of Five Novels
Emily Henry, a popular romance author, now has five of her novels being made into films and television series. Beach Read, People We Meet on Vacation, Book Lovers, Happy Place, and Funny Story are the five novels that she has written consecutively since 2020 that are being adapted on-screen.
‘People We Meet on Vacation’
People We Meet on Vacation follows two characters named Poppy and Alex. The pair have nothing in common and live far away from each other; she lives in New York City and he lives in their hometown. The two met in a car-share home from college years before, and they take a week’s vacation together every year. 3000 Pictures and Temple Hill will produce the film adaptation from the screenplay written by Yulin Kuang. Brett Haley is set to direct, and Tom Blythe (The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) and Emily Bader (My Lady Jane) are set to star as Alex and Poppy.
‘Beach Read’
Beach Read follows two authors, January and Augustus, who make a challenge to swap genres for the summer to aid their writer’s blocks. January and Gus previously knew each other during their time in college, and they happen to run into each other again at Lake Michigan while on their own writer’s retreats. The novel was released in summer 2020. Yulin Kuang, who is adapting the screenplay of People We Meet on Vacation, will be writing and directing the film adaptation of Beach Read. Kuang is an up-and-coming author who released her debut novel How to End a Love Story in April 2024. Kuang’s novel was a Reese Witherspoon book club pick. The film was announced to be in development in April 2023, but no casting information of who will play January and Augustus has been announced at this time.
‘Book Lovers’
Book Lovers follows the story of a literary agent named Nora who spends a vacation in August in North Carolina. While on her vacation, she keeps running into Charlie, who is a book editor, whom she has met many times before. As the novel progresses, the two unravel their own story. The film adaptation of Book Lovers, which was released in 2022, was announced in March 2023 by film production company Tango. Sarah Heyward has been said to be writing the script. Heyward is known for her work on HBO’s Girls and Facebook Watch’s SKAM Austin. No announcements about who will star in the film or who will be directing the film have been made.
‘Happy Place’
Jennifer Lopez’s film company, Nuyorican Production, has picked up Emily Henry’s book, Happy Place. The novel follows the story of Harriet and Wyn, who have been together since college. The couple broke up five months ago but did not tell their friend group. Harriet and Wyn are then forced to pretend to be together when their friends call an emergency trip to a beach house in Maine. Will all the pretending reunite their feelings for each other, or will they call their relationship quits? Happy Place will be adapted into a television series instead of a film for the streaming service Netflix. No casting announcements have been made yet. Leila Cohan has been announced as the showrunner. Cohan has worked for Netflix before as a co-executive producer on the popular Regency drama Bridgerton.
‘Funny Story’
Emily Henry’s fifth book-to-screen adaptation is her most recent release, Funny Story. This novel tells the story of Daphne, who is a children’s librarian and just broke up with her fiance Peter. Daphne takes up living with Miles, who is Peter’s new girlfriend’s ex. The two hatch a plan that could result in a new relationship. Henry will be writing the script for the adaptation of Funny Story. Alexander Black and Natalie Seller from Lyrical Media and Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett from Ryder Picture Company will be producing the film. There are no actors or directors attached to the film yet.
