‘It Ends With Us’ Has Box Office Success For Night One

It Ends with Us (2024) Official Sony Pictures Entertainment Trailer

From Page to Screen

Released August 9, 2024, the Justin Baldoni directed (and starring) romantic drama It Ends With Us has already racked up huge opening weekend numbers. Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Colleen Hoover, book and film lovers everywhere have seemingly flocked to the theaters.

A New Future of Romantic Dramas

Colleen Hoover’s books have been routinely capturing readers’ hearts for the past few years. In July of 2019, director and actor Baldoni began his project of bringing the story to life. The film follows a florist named Lily Bloom (portrayed by Blake Lively), who falls head over heels for a neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid (portrayed by Baldoni). However, their relationship soon crumbles as Lily realizes just how dangerous her lover is. Originally set to release in February and then June of 2024, the long-anticipated film finally reached local theaters.

With Hoover’s popularity (and sometimes controversy over her books’ themes) in the literature world and Lively’s run with her husband’s Deadpool and Wolverine press tour, there was no doubt that the romance film would receive a big financial forecast. With the high turnaround of opening day audiences, the $25 million film budget is sure to be made up by Saturday night.

The Numbers

Deadline recently reported that It Ends With Us has amassed over $7 million just from the Thursday previews alone. $40 million is expected for the opening weekend due to the premiere that has rivaled other female-driven films such as Taylor Swift: Eras Tour ($2.8M), Where the Crawdads Sing ($2.3M), and even Fifty Shades Darker ($5.7M). Though the ratings for the PG-13 film have been average so far at best, there will still be hoards of fans seeing their beloved story this weekend. Perhaps this will be a lesson to film companies that some movies do, in fact, deserve to be seen in a theater rather than an at-home streaming service.

Distributed by Sony Pictures and with the work of Columbia Pictures and Wayfarer Studios, the anticipated film has been reported by Deadline to be most popular with women over 25, who make up 53% of the audience. It Ends With Us has been announced to stream to Netflix and Hulu in the coming months. For now, the romantic drama can be seen in theaters. However, audiences may want to buy up tickets fast, as the film is already selling out.
