‘Lilo & Stitch’ Live-Action Coming Summer 2025

Lilo & Stitch (2025) Official Disney D23 Expo Teaser Trailer

The Original ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Was Released in 2002

Lovers of Disney animated movies are looking forward to a Lilo & Stitch live-action movie, set for production and planned for release in the summer of 2025. The remake aligns with Disney’s multi-year plan of reimagining its animated classics for new audiences after achieving success with the previous movie remakes.

A Stellar Cast Brings Beloved Characters to Life

The live-action Lilo & Stitch has a strong-willed cast that will be able to convey the movie’s characters, which were created in 2002. Among the actors, Maia Kealoha will perform as Lilo Pelekai — the main female character of the film. This cheerful girl gains a new friend, a visitor from another planet that happens to be an experiment in the shape of a dog (Stitch). Newbie Sydney Agudong will be featured as Nani Pelekai, Lilo’s sibling, while Kaipo Dudoit is the charming David Kawena, Nani’s boyfriend. Courtney B. Vance is chosen to play the character of Cobra Bubbles, the cranky but sensitive social worker.

Among non-human characters, it is also important to stress the presence of the voice actors in the film. Initially, Jason Bateman was also cast for the film; however, he left the project and was replaced by Zach Galifianakis, who will voice the protagonist Dr. Jumba Jookiba, who created Stitch. Billy Magnussen will voice the lovable yet neurotic Agent Pleakley. However, it is in its final stages of negotiation if Chris Sanders, the original voice actor of Stitch, will again lend his voice to the role of this mischievously chaotic and blue character.

Behind the Scenes: Creative Team and Production Challenges

The film is being developed under the newly-formed Blue Koala Pictures, Inc., which references Stitch’s physical appearance. That is why Dean Fleischer Camp, who has previously worked on Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, is invited to direct the film, as he has a specific vision of how to tell this story. The shooting of the production has not been smooth due to some issues, such as one fire in the set and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which stopped the shooting, but everything is currently underway, and the shooting has continued in Hawaii.

Controversies Surrounding the Casting

Appearance-wise, the choice of actors Sydney Agudong and Kaipo Dudoit stirred some controversy online concerning colorism and representation. Nevertheless, the production team continues striving to create a picture that will refer to the previous film yet offer some novelties that could be interesting for classic fans and people who have never watched this kind of movie before.

Where to Watch and Release Date

The real-life version of the Lilo & Stitch movie is expected to come out in the summer of next year. Audiences can also expect it to have a worldwide theatrical release, with possibly a Disney+ release after the theatrical release. Follow the updates of this release day by day!
