Severance (2022) Official Season 2 Date Announcement
A New Take On The Work-Life Balance
Work-life balance is a leading cause of anxiety among workers and students alike. Its difficulty only creates a possibility for more worry among employees. In Severance, there is a possible solution offered to the problem at hand, but is it really for the worker’s benefit? Created by Dan Erickson and directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle, Severance, brings the dystopian drama genre to new horizons and steps above the usual atmosphere of what science fiction can look like. Looking at the first season’s 9 episodes, there are many things to explore and understand.
Severance as a Solution
The series’ plot revolves around a concept known colloquially as “Severance.” This is an invention from a company within the show known as Lumon. Foundationally, the “Severance” procedure is an operation that aims at separating an employee’s personal life memories from their work life memories. This means that the employees at Lumon who have undergone the procedure can only remember their work life when they are working their shifts, and once they clock out, they don’t remember anything that happened at work. It seems like an enthralling idea at first, but upon the arrival of Helly R. (Britt Lower), a new employee who has undergone the “Severance” procedure, the twisted nature of the operations at hand slowly starts to show.
Helly R. is introduced in the pilot episode, alongside the rest of the Microdata Refinement crew. The crew is composed of Mark Scout (Adam Scott), Dylan George (Zach Cherry), and Irving Bailiff (John Turturro). The three veterans of the office are accustomed to their work environment, but Helly R. believes that she doesn’t belong and that she was thrust into the severance procedure against her will, by her personal self. The others try to make her understand the nature of “Severance,” but she refuses to understand and becomes speculative of the procedure’s true intentions. The team of three eventually joins her in investigating, as more and more evidence arises.
Two Sides of the Story
Acting-wise, the show deserves great merit in this department. The cast is full of heavy hitters, as well as lesser-known (but still exceptional) actors. To name a few, Christopher Walken and John Turturro have amazing chemistry, Adam Scott remains true to his dry humor and embraces a more dramatic role (which works wonders), and Tramell Tillman steals the show anytime he’s on screen. The most impressive aspect of the acting comes down to playing the different lives of the same characters. For those who are “severed,” the character development is seen doubly and is represented in an exemplary manner. Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, John Turturro, Britt Lower, and Christopher Walken truly blossom here. Other characters such as Mark’s sister Devon (Jen Tullock), and her husband Ricken (Michael Chernus) add greatly to the story and the world being built. And of course, Patricia Arquette as Ms. Cobel triumphs in her role as a maniacal boss who is unsure of her plans. In essence, the acting presented on-screen for audiences is nothing short of top-tier.
Visually In Tune
Severance also delivers exceptional work in the visual department. Cinematographer Jessica Lee Gagné stays consistent with the quality of visuals throughout the entire season. Creating fascinating symmetry, as well as unnerving imagery within each episode, allows for a truly immersive experience. In the realm of production design, Art Director Angelica Borrero, Set Decorator Andrew Baseman, and Costume Designer Sarah Edwards bring the world to life with their work and set the atmosphere to a consistently fascinating tone. Without their work, the show would not be the same as it is.
Conclusion
Having a more detailed account of the events taking place within the space of Lumon, audiences are now more eager than ever before to see what’s next in the upcoming second season. The innovative series is poised to return in January 2025 with fans hoping that their questions are answered and that the ride continues to be as captivating as the first season.
Severance is available to stream on Apple TV+.
