Fanmade ‘H2M’ Project Shut Down After A Year of Development

‘H2M’ Mod Official Trailer

MW2 Remastered Remains Shelved

Gamers, specifically fans of the Call of Duty franchise, were heartbroken today as an upcoming fan project, “H2M,” that set out to re-master a beloved entry in the franchise was shut down by a Cease and Desist Letter from Activision. Fans have been disheartened by the news, given that there were many players excited for the project’s release on Friday, August 16. The project had some small closed-play sessions with well-known content creators from the Call of Duty sphere, such as Merkmusic, Futives, Faze Jev, Bams, etc. Unfortunately, fans are now left awry and in anger at Activision for their decision to cut off the fan project and essentially make the project’s developers feel like their work was meaningless.

The Project Itself

“H2M” was the name of the project that was in development for over a year by fans of the franchise who used their knowledge of game development to bring a remastered version of the multiplayer from 2009’s Modern Warfare 2. The project aimed to recycle and re-master assets and elements from 2017’s Modern Warfare Remastered. Using this game as a base for their project, they were able to create an updated experience of Modern Warfare 2‘s multiplayer that many fans held close to their hearts, whether it be from their childhood or early adulthood. The project would not only include the entirety of Modern Warfare 2‘s multiplayer re-mastered, but it would also add new maps, weapons, camos, and challenges for players to chase when playing. The project required players to buy the base game of Modern Warfare Remastered to then be able to download the project’s free client that would change everything about the base game into the project they built.

Not The First of Its Kind

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that an occurrence like this has happened with a Call of Duty fan project. There have been several other projects, such as “IW4x” and “S1X” that suffered similar fates. These projects were aimed at making the old games more playable in the current landscape, since the base games associated with them were usually filled with hackers who would make the experiences unplayable. They flew under the radar for a good while, until eventually Activision caught on and gave them the same fate as “H2M” got. The difference with “H2M” that gave the fans hope that it would survive was that every player who wanted to play the project HAD to buy the base game of Modern Warfare Remastered. For the previously mentioned projects, the fan developers had provided the base games for free with the installation of their client, so it was more obviously against Activision’s TOS. Another glimmer of hope that fans had received was the fact that Modern Warfare Remastered had gone on sale for the past week, cutting the price down to $20.

Conclusion

Many players are saddened by the news, and some angry due to the fact that they can no longer refund the base game of the project because of Steam’s rules on refunds. Fans certainly feel like they’ve been backstabbed by Activision, and community sentiment towards them has considerably lowered. With Black Ops 6 slated to release on October 25 of this year, Activision could see some decrease in sales due to their recent decisions.
