Twisters (2024) Official Universal Pictures Trailer

Storm Chasers Return to the Big Screen

Twisters is a 2024 standalone sequel to the 1996 film Twister. It follows two groups of storm chasers as they clash while solving an outbreak of tornadoes in Oklahoma.  It is directed by Lee Isaac Chung and written by Mark L. Smith.

Storm Chasers and Cowboys

The plot of Twisters as a standalone sequel to the 1996 film Twister rather than a direct sequel to the film was a genius idea, as it takes ideas from Twister and adds them into the 2024 film. The film is about two competing groups of storm chasers who both are in Oklahoma trying to explore the tornado outbreak. The two storm chaser groups work amazingly to make the film intriguing to see which group will get to the tornado first. The story centers around Kate, a storm chaser who is traumatized after watching her friends and boyfriend die at the hands of an EF5 tornado. She is invited to join her friend who is working for a company called Storm Par, which focuses on mobile tornado radar. Kate’s trauma from the EF5 storm creates an apprehensive and fearful vibe for part of the film until she works her way back into being a storm chaser. The apprehensiveness of Kate becoming a storm chaser again is relatable to audiences because everyone is wary if they are starting a new career, job, or activity. Kate’s story throughout the film should be appreciated because it shows the effects that trauma can have on a person, as she experiences a panic attack during her first storm chase with Storm Par. Throughout the film, a romance blooms as Kate connects emotionally with Tyler, who is a popular YouTube storm chaser and the competitor of Storm Par. The plot as a whole, which involves a slight romance between storm chasers and two rival groups, was amazing, intriguing, and kept audiences at the edge of their seats till the final moments of the film.

Acting as Characters

The main cast of Twisters is Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane. Daisy Edgar-Jones plays Kate, a former storm chaser who has a traumatic experience during a EF5 tornado and the love interest of Tyler. Edgar-Jones plays Kate incredibly. She treated the character with care, knowing that people who experience PTSD could relate to her. During a scene where Kate has a panic attack during a tornado, Edgar-Jones acted believable in the scene in which the audience could believe the character’s struggle. Glen Powell plays the cowboy tornado wrangling YouTuber Tyler. Powell made the audience fall in love with him throughout the film, as he is initially someone who just wants to be YouTube famous but gradually becomes likable by showing his emotions. He demonstrates how much Tyler loves tornadoes through an emotional family story and how he wants to help Kate stop them from tearing communities apart. Edgar-Jones and Powell are a dynamic duo and have an emotional connection that is unmatched. The two characters have an emotional love dynamic. They began to understand each other through Tyler learning about the project that Kate was working on that led her to have her traumatic experience. One of the funniest characters in the film is Ben, played by Harry Hadden-Paton. Ben is a journalist from London that is writing a story about Tyler but is unaware of what he is getting himself into. He has some hilarious moments, especially when he is riding in the truck with Tyler and his crew and they are in the middle of tornados.

Creating Tornados

Twisters is one of the best films of 2024. It took four years for Twisters to be released, as it was initially pitched in 2020. The film was originally going to be a direct sequel to the 1996 film but was changed to a standalone sequel. The 2023 writers and actors strikes had put a halt in production, which continued after the two groups struck deals with the production companies. The film’s tornado footage was amazing, as it allowed for the actors to show real emotions. An important aspect of the film was the tornados, which were created using special effects to make them look real. The production used technical consultants, including storm chasers, to create the ten tornadoes in the film. The final tornado was inspired by three different storms; 2013 El Reno, 2021 Western Kentucky, and a 2021 Kansas wedge tornado. The set of Twisters had wind fans that would run at 70 miles per hour and two jet engines that would run farther away from the sets at 170 miles per hour with dump tanks and high pressure water cannons to create rain and hail. Along with production was the use of music throughout the film. Popular country singers recorded songs for the film, including Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert, Bailey Zimmerman, and Jelly Roll. The song “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma” by Luke Combs has already gotten an award nomination and was released two months before the release of Twisters.  The film’s album was released on July 19.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, Twisters is an amazing film that should be watched in theaters, especially in 3D or 4D. It was one of the best movies that was released in summer 2024. The film should be watched multiple times to take in the magic of the cast and creation of the film. Also make sure to listen to the incredible soundtrack that was made for the film!
