The Crow (2024) Official Lionsgate Movies Trailer
‘The Crow’ Likely Won’t See a Resurrection
In a film centered around death and resurrection, the 2024 reboot of The Crow will likely learn a valuable lesson about second chances.
In its opening weekend, The Crow came in 8th place at the domestic box office, following weekend hangovers such as Deadpool & Wolverine, Alien: Romulus, It Ends with Us, and Twisters. Also coming out this weekend were Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut Blink Twice and the Christian film The Forge. Sadly, The Crow wasn’t even able to beat the 15th-anniversary rerelease of Coraline, which is currently in its second week. The Bill Skarsgård-led picture had a price tag of $50 million but was only able to scrape together $4.6 million, earning its place among one of the worst openers for a wide-release film this year.
True Love Never Dies… Or Does It?
The Crow is a reboot of the 1994 cult classic of the same name, which spawned a theatrical sequel in 1996, The Crow: City of Angels, and two direct-to-video films, The Crow: Salvation in 2000 and The Crow: Wicked Prayer in 2005. The franchise is based on the comic book series written by James O’Barr. This new reboot was directed by Rupert Sanders and written by Zack Baylin and William Schneider. Distributed by Lionsgate, the film starred Bill Skarsgård, FKA Twigs, and Danny Huston. Similar to the original, the 2024 reboot follows Eric Draven and Shelly Webster after they are brutally murdered. Rising from the grave and given a second chance to right his wrongs, Eric traverses the worlds of the living and the dead to seek out violent revenge against his and his girlfriend’s killers.
In a time when theater attendance is very shaky, popular IP has become the safest gamble for studios to risk. However, Lionsgate has learned that even the most cautious risks are not always the best. Three weeks ago, their $110 million video game adaptation Borderlands premiered in theaters but has only earned $24 million at the worldwide box office. Between Borderlands and The Crow, the two only end-cap what was already a rough summer for several high-profile films.
Was The Crow Ever Going to Work?
A reboot of The Crow has been in the works for over a decade, with early development on another adaptation tracing back to 2008. Numerous big-name Hollywood A-listers have been attached to star as Eric Draven over the years, including Jason Momoa, Nicholas Hoult, Norman Reedus, Tom Hiddleston, Ryan Gosling, James McAvoy, Bradley Cooper, and Mark Wahlberg, to name a few. The original 1994 film was a hit upon its original release and has developed a cult following, but the following three sequels have all been received poorly by critics and audiences. Adding to that, The Crow hasn’t had much cultural influence or is as widely known today among many viewers. Likewise, there also seems to be a dark aura surrounding the franchise, given that the original comic books were written by O’Barr to cope with the death of his wife. This translated over into the 1994 film with the tragic death of Brandon Lee, the actor who starred in the original movie, on the set of the film.
Adding to an already disastrous performance, The Crow isn’t being well received. The action-fantasy film earned a 20% on Rotten Tomatoes critically and a 65% audience rating. However, Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak from Thursday night screenings gathered that fans gave the film a 47% grade and a 36% definite recommendation. With poor word of mouth and an already catastrophic start, it doesn’t look like the result will be good for Lionsgate. Adding to that the following weeks ahead have some substantial competition, The Crow likely won’t find a crowd in theaters. There may still be hope for an afterlife once the film hits streaming, but even those chances seem slim.
The Crow is currently playing in theaters.
