Exploring an Ancient Evil
Out of all the demon-centric horror films that have come out over the past century, only a small few actually go back to the monsters’ ancient roots. Greg McLean, known for his work on the Wolf Creek franchise and The Belko Experiment, will be writing and directing the upcoming supernatural thriller The First Exorcist.
Producing an Ancient Tale
On August 17, 2024, Deadline released an exclusive article on McLean’s plans for his upcoming film alongside his production company Emu Creek Pictures. Film producer Mark Fennessy’s Helium company (known for Paper Dolls and The Assembly) will also be part of the project that will begin shooting in Victoria, Australia sometime in 2025. The film follows a mother in biblical times who desperately searches for a cure for her daughter’s demonic possession. Deadline describes the plot, “As their lives descend into a nightmare, the mother learns of a mysterious healer with the power to expel demons, and embarks on a dangerous race against time – encountering hostile Roman authorities on her perilous mission to find the healer and save her daughter’s life.”
As of now, there is no word on who will be cast in the film or when the film will be set for release. However, McLean has noted that they plan to use the best technology they have to build the lands of ancient civilizations for the film. With McLean and Fennessy’s past work, it seems plausible.
McLean and Thriller
Demon possessions and exorcisms are not new to the horror and thriller genres. However, this period-style twist of the trope is finding hype not only with the fans but with the film crew as well. Before anything more has been revealed to the public about the film, Fennessy has already expressed his excitement about the project. He raved to Deadline, “Greg’s script delivers an intensity and emotional depth that, combined with jaw-dropping scares, a fascinating historical setting and powerful supernatural themes, will create a milestone film experience. His refined storytelling and dynamic visual style will elevate The First Exorcist, and we are thrilled to bring his spine-chilling vision to life.”
McLean’s past success with the Wolf Creek franchise has solidified his spot as a competent and riveting storyteller. His other works include The Darkness, Jungle, and How Fast Can You Swim. Until more news reaches the public on The First Exorcist, fans can stream Wolf Creek on Tubi and Apple TV.
