Pablo Larraín’s Upcoming Biopic has Found a Home
Netflix has recently secured the rights to Maria, a biopic directed by acclaimed filmmaker Pablo Larraín. Known for his visually compelling and emotionally charged storytelling, Larraín has turned his focus to the life of the iconic opera singer Maria Callas, showcasing a deeply nuanced portrayal of her artistry and struggles. This acquisition underscores Netflix’s continued commitment to bringing high-caliber cinematic projects to its platform, further solidifying its reputation as a key player in the industry.
What is known
Pablo Larraín’s biopic Maria delves into the life of opera legend Maria Callas, capturing the complexities and nuances of her extraordinary career and personal struggles. Starring Angelina Jolie in the titular role, the film will explore the dramatic highs and lows of Callas’ life, from her rise to international stardom to the personal challenges that shaped her legacy. Jolie’s portrayal is expected to bring depth and authenticity to the character, capturing the essence of Callas’ passion, vulnerability, and enduring influence on the world of opera. The film is poised to be a compelling exploration of an iconic figure, brought to life by Larraín’s distinctive directorial vision and Jolie’s powerful performance. According to Deadline, Larraín states:
“I’m excited to partner again with the Netflix team who care so passionately about movies. This film is my most personal work yet. It is a creative imagining and psychological portrait of Maria Callas who, after dedicating her life to performing for audiences around the world, decides finally to find her own voice, her own identity, and sing for herself. I’m deeply honored to tell this story and share it with audiences worldwide like Maria did with her life.”
This marks Netflix’s second collaboration with Larraín as director, following last year’s El Conde, which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography. It’s also the seventh project Netflix has partnered on with Larraín’s production company, Fabula, including Maite Alberdi’s forthcoming film In Her Place. After its debut at the Venice Film Festival on August 29, Maria will be featured at the New York Film Festival.

Larraín’s nuanced storytelling and distinctive visual style have earned him critical acclaim, solidifying his reputation as a filmmaker who brings a fresh perspective to the lives of women who have shaped history.
