Be Careful ‘What You Wish For’

Down on his luck and saddled with debt from his gambling problems, talented chef Ryan flees to a Latin American villa where he reconnects with his old culinary school friend Jack. Jack seems to have his own unique troubles but lives an extravagant life. Ryan is envious of having his life until he gets to live Jack’s life after fate takes a grim turn. A harrowing suspense-horror, What You Wish For was directed, written, and produced by Nicholas Tomnay (The Perfect Host). Studios Evergreen Avenue, Jaguar Bite, and Freestyle Picture Company produced the film while Magnet Releasing distributed it.

A Well-Paced Thriller

Thrillers don’t always leave their mark like the filmmakers want them to. What You Wish For was one such thriller that managed to hit the mark with a deliciously enticing plot. While the thrill may seem low to major thrill seekers, the movie is sure to unsettle viewers with its grim take on the saying: “Be careful what you wish for.” The pacing is great for a thriller, but may not be for those who want their thrill fast and easy. The start is slow and for good reason. The buildup may feel unbearable for the 20 or 30-so minutes the movie uses to set up the setting and main character, but without it, the entire tension built up would fall through.

From the start, there’s a sense of unease. This only builds throughout, especially once the plot really starts. The viewers and Ryan know exactly what the thrilling element is, but can do nothing against it. As much as what Ryan knows, there’s even more he doesn’t. The vibe is a constant chilly stream running down the back of the viewer’s spine with a twist that is exquisite and so naturally woven into the story. With a heart-dropping and dreadfully hilarious ironic conclusion to boot, this movie certainly isn’t for everyone but would be adored by those who love it when the thriller elements are known to the character without fully understanding them.

A Strong Cast But an Odd Character Choice

What You Wish For stars Nick Stahl as Ryan (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) and Brian Groh (Breaking) as Jack. Joining them are Tamsin Topolski (Penny Dreadful), Randy Vasquez (Murder in the Vineyard), Penelope Mitchell (Sting), and Juan Carlos Messier (Stolen Away). Overall, each cast member delivers on their characters, giving the movie a variety of character personalities to play with.

The one unfavorable choice involving the characters is how nonchalant and chill Stahl’s character Ryan is. As the main character, one would almost expect him to freak out or react a lot more to the predicament he gets himself in. Yet, for the majority of the movie, he stays chill and acts far too calm for someone in his position. It’s not wholly unrealistic, as people react differently to the same (or similar) events Ryan experienced, but it made the character feel not as real.

Luckily, Stahl’s character is redeemed in that department which pushes aside questions of why he’s acting and how he is worth it. Stahl along with the rest of the cast gives a phenomenal performance. Topolski’s acting as immaculate Imogene is one to note, winning Best Actress at Grimmfest for her performance in the movie. So many of the characters were hateable in the best way or felt for as they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Major Potential

If not for the lack of marketing and investments, this movie could have been better well-known. The cinematography has its flaws like most movies, but was well put together. The lighting was effective and the camera work helped the viewer focus on the characters. It is no surprise the movie won multiple awards because of how well the camera angles and lightning impacted the tension. Nothing seemed to be too over the top or unnecessary. It all tied together well.

The soundtrack, featuring music by Jeff Russo (Fargo) and Tracie Turnbull (The Ice Cream Man), ties the movie together even better. Along with the camera work, the score helped push the unease onto the audience. The orchestra music does its job well of striking fear into the viewer, making them question what will happen next. Featuring a tiny bit of gore done tastefully, the cinematography doesn’t overshadow the suspense but complements it.

Best to Go in Blind

Originally premiered at the 2023 Fantasia International Film Festival, What You Wish For came out in theaters in the United States in May 2024. The movie earned six wins including Best Director at A Night of Horror International Film Festival and Grimmfest, Best Feature Film at the Sheffield Horror Film Festival, Best Screenplay at Grimmfest, Best Actress at Grimmfest, and Best Film at Grimmfest. Unfortunately, there was very little marketing for the movie. The plot may be far from new and doesn’t provide hard-hitting twists and turns like The Menu, but What You Wish For is a fabulous indie movie.

The one flaw of the main character doesn’t make the movie unwatchable, far from it. By the end, everything will make sense, and witnessing the shift in Ryan as he realizes his new life will sear itself into every viewer’s brain. With tense atmospheres and some dark humor, this is a thriller worth checking out. Go in blind: it makes the slow start worth it.

What You Wish For can be purchased digitally on Amazon Prime Video. It’s a cook-or-die world, so “be careful what you wish for.”
