Official Music Video for Sabrina Carpenter’s “Taste.”
Carpenter’s 'Taste' Features Even More Horrific References
Pop artist and actress Sabrina Carpenter (Emergency) has made a splash with her newest single from her album Short n’ Sweet. “Taste,” the third song from the album, was released on August 23 and has amassed over 50 million views so far.
A Love Note to Death Becomes Her
The 1992 cult classic horror/comedy Death Becomes Her starred Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada), Goldie Hawn (The First Wives Club), and Bruce Willis (Die Hard (1988)). The film was directed by Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump), while Martin Donovan (Apartment Zero) and David Koepp (Jurassic Park (1993)) wrote the screenplay. With 16 nominations and five wins, including one Oscar, Death Becomes Her is getting more attention due to Carpenter’s music video.
Carpenter’s “Taste” is filled to the brim with references to Death Becomes Her. Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) stars alongside Carpenter in the music video. The premise is a love letter to the film, following a similar plot of two women unable to die. So, they kill each other over and over to get the attention of a man. The music video makes numerous references to the cult classic, from wardrobe decisions to visually stunning moments from the film. Just like in the movie, the music video takes place at a grand, eerie mansion. Carpenter’s references to Death Becomes Her include the shotgun scene where Ortega’s character shoots Carpenter in the stomach, sending her over the railing. This scene mimics when Streep’s character shoots Hawn’s in the stomach, leaving a giant hole. Carpenter’s character is later seen with a similar wound. In the video, there’s another reference to when Hawn’s character breaks Streep’s character’s neck with a shovel. Carpenter instead breaks Ortega’s character’s neck via voodoo doll but emulates the scene. One of the most notable references comes in the form of the funeral scene at the end of the video. Just like Streep and Hawn’s characters, Carpenter and Ortega end the story leaving a funeral as friends, joking about the guy they were fighting over who died — a perfect end to a grand ode to a cult classic.
Filled to the Brim With References
While Death Becomes Her was one of the more prominent references, Carpenter’s video is filled with other fun allusions to numerous camp films, either through outfits, scenes, or the cast. Scene-wise, Ginger Snaps, the 2000 Canadian supernatural flick, is referenced when Carpenter is impaled on a white picket fence and flips Ortega the bird. The classic Psycho is also referenced in a recreated version of the iconic shower scene. A separate (and slightly less obvious) reference includes one to Child’s Play. Though questionable if it is directly referencing the franchise, there is a scene where Carpenter uses a voodoo doll to harm Ortega. This may be a slight nod to the killer doll Chucky.
For her video, Carpenter even threw in some iconic outfits and accessories in her references. She referred to Debbie Jellinsky’s dress in Addams Family Values and Kill Bill: Volume 1 character Elle Drive’s white nurse dress and medical eyepatch. And to top it all off, Ortega wasn’t the only horror star Carpenter recruited. Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends) played the boyfriend in the music video.
The entirety of Carpenter’s “Taste” music video makes some form of reference. While the video is akin to a love letter addressed to Death Becomes Her, Carpenter doesn’t shy away from making references to a suitable amount of films.

Her music has grown a fanbase worldwide, and her concerts are sold out in the United States and internationally.

Callbacks to Older Media
Many music videos have made callbacks to older films. The most notable of these include “thank U, next” by Ariana Grande, which refers to iconic classic films such as Bring It On, Legally Blonde, and Mean Girls. Carpenter does something similar with her music video “Taste” but references numerous horror films instead of classic teen comedies.
“Taste” can be streamed on numerous music streaming platforms while Death Becomes Her can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
