A Thriller To Watch While Stuck Indoors
Paramount Plus released the trailer for their latest crime thriller, Curfew. The upcoming show follows a murder mystery within a dystopia where men live under a strict curfew.
‘Curfew’ On Paramount Plus
The YouTube channel for Paramount Plus released the first official trailer for their latest series, Curfew. The series will occur in the future UK, where all men will be electronically tagged, tracked, and placed under curfew from 7 PM to 7 AM under the “Women’s Safety Act.” Violators are sentenced to a minimum of two years.
However, a woman is found murdered overnight. The police chief, Pamela Green (Sarah Parish), refuses to believe a woman could do such a thing and fights to prove that a man did, threatening to undermine the system. Other characters include the officer Sarah (Mandip Gill) and the teacher Helen (Alexandra Burke).
The series produced by Evolutionary and Vertigo Films in the UK will premiere on Paramount Plus on October 10 and run for six episodes.
The Original Book
Jayne Cowie’s original novel, After Dark in the UK, was published in 2022 and was her debut. The promotional material billed the story as a “reverse Handmaid’s Tale” in which men are subjugated and women are in power. However, the book is far more sympathetic to its dystopia than its antithesis. From the promotional material, several changes were made, such as making the decree three years old instead of sixteen from the original story.

As one might expect, the book’s premise proved controversial. Most reviews criticized the book’s unlikeable protagonists, strawman men, and “man-bashing” undertones. Despite this, the book sold well enough to warrant an adaptation, first announced this February. Regardless, the book sparked an important discussion on gender and safety on the streets.
Can the Series Work?
In short, the curfew is a logistical nightmare on the scale of the Blip from The Avengers. Basic infrastructure and businesses would have their workforces slashed by at least a quarter. The ethical debate is another story. From the protests in the trailer, this Act’s passing didn’t go down well.
Fortunately, the series has strong talent behind the scenes. Popular newcomer Bobby Brazier will join the cast alongside veterans Larry Lamb, Mandip Gill, and Alexandra Burke. Joasia Goldyn, who previously worked on episodes of Brittania and A Town Called Malice, will direct the series.
Paramount Plus has already given viewers many iconic series, such as Star Trek: Discovery and Knuckles. Hopefully, the creators can add a layer of nuance to the original story.
