‘Woman of the Hour’ Teaser Trailer Released
Anna Kendrick, best known for her comedy roles, took a new direction with her career. Next month, Netflix will release her directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, following the ‘Dating Game Killer’ Rodney Alcala.
Anna Kendrick’s Debut
According to Bloody Disgusting, Netflix released the teaser for Anna Kendrick’s upcoming directorial debut, Woman of the Hour. The film will retell an infamous encounter on the live game show The Dating Game. Kendrick herself stars as the titular character, bachelorette Cheryl Bradshaw. However, she won a date with none other than infamous serial killer Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto).
While primarily a thriller, the film includes black comedy and commentary on gender themes. Produced by AGC Studios and Vertigo Entertainment, it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and won critical acclaim. Netflix will release it on October 18 for its streaming service.
‘Woman of the Hour’s’ Inspiration
As a piece of “true crime,” Woman of the Hour retells an actual event involving the real-life serial killer Rodney Alcala. Alcala was a monstrous, prolific serial killer and predator who murdered numerous women throughout the seventies. Since then, he has joined the pantheon of infamous and studied serial killers from the American media cycle.

Most viewers know him by his moniker, “The Dating Game Killer,” because he starred on the eponymous game show in the middle of his spree. The other contestants noted his creepy and offputting demeanor during the show. With true crime reenactments and docuseries gaining traction nowadays, this film should quickly find its audience.
Could the Film Work?
Overall, the film has strong talent behind it. While this is a new genre and line of work for Anna Kendrick, she has demonstrated her skill as an actress as the lead of the Trolls and Pitch Perfect film series. As for the villain himself, Daniel Zovatto has proven his ability to star in crime thrillers such as Penny Dreadful: City of Angels and Don’t Breathe. Furthermore, veteran stars Tony Hale and Nicolette Robinson join the production.
Writer Ian McDonald first penned the script in 2017, when Netflix deemed it one of the best. With so many talented actors attached to the film and so many accolades upon its first screening, Woman of the Hour is on track to become another hit for Netflix.
