A Mother's Fight for Safety Amidst WWII's Devastating ‘Blitz’ in London

Steve McQueen’s upcoming film Blitz, starring Saoirse Ronan, delves into the lives of Londoners during World War II as they navigate the devastation of the Blitz. The film’s first trailer, recently released, offers a glimpse into the strength and determination of those struggling to survive amidst the chaos.

The Plot of ‘Blitz’

Steve McQueen’s upcoming historical drama Blitz takes viewers back to London during one of the most harrowing periods of World War II, as Nazi Germany relentlessly bombed the city. Furthermore, the Apple Original film, led by Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan, tells a gripping story of survival and resilience amidst chaos. Ronan stars as Rita, a mother desperate to reunite with her young son George (played by young newcomer Elliott Heffernan), whom she sent to the countryside for safety as the Blitz tore through the city. Moreover, McQueen’s talent for crafting emotional narratives shines through in the trailer, with a diverse ensemble cast that includes Harris Dickinson, Erin Kellyman, Stephen Graham, Kathy Burke, and Paul Weller.

According to Variety, “Blitz will world premiere on Oct. 9 as the opening night gala of this year’s BFI London Film Festival. In a statement announcing its premiere at the festival, McQueen said: “Blitz is a movie about Londoners. It honors the spirit of what and how Londoners endured during the Blitz, but also explores the true representation of people in London, while at its core is the story of a working-class family desperate to be reunited during times of war.” Additionally, the film marks McQueen’s return to feature filmmaking after Widows (2018), blending his signature focus on human endurance with a vivid depiction of wartime London. McQueen not only directs but also writes and produces the film.

Steve McQueen

Steve McQueen has solidified his place as one of the most influential directors in modern cinema, known for his unflinching explorations of complex human experiences and social issues. Furthermore, his 2013 film 12 Years a Slave garnered widespread acclaim, winning the Academy Award for Best Picture, making McQueen the first Black director to receive this honor. Additionally, his earlier work, Shame (2011), showcased his bold approach to storytelling, with Michael Fassbender delivering a raw performance in a film that tackled the often-taboo subject of sex addiction.

In 2018, McQueen continued to push cinematic boundaries with Widows, blending heist thriller elements with sharp social commentary on race, class, and gender. Throughout his career, McQueen has earned numerous accolades, including BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and nominations from major film festivals, establishing him as a trailblazing force in film history. Moreover, his ability to create visually striking, emotionally resonant narratives has not only earned him critical praise but also solidified his role as a director who continually challenges and redefines the boundaries of cinema.

The film is set to premiere in select theaters on November 1, with a worldwide streaming release on Apple TV+ following on November 22.
