The Hit Series Returns on Netflix

After capturing global audiences more than three years ago, Squid Game returns to Netflix on December 26 for a second season. The show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, will continue his storied journey to see his vision take life.

Season 1 of ‘Squid Game’

Squid Game became an immediate hit with Netflix audiences worldwide, upon its fall release in 2021. Korean actor, Lee Jung-jae (Hunt, New World) led a brilliant cast that helped bring to life some of television’s most endearing and complex characters. Furthermore, the first season was showered with critical praise and won 6 of its 14 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Jung-jae’s recognition as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Additionally, Dong-hyuk won Oustanding Directing for a Drama Series for the episode “Mugunghwa kkoch-i pideon nal” or “The Day the Mugunghwa Flower Bloomed.” The title references the ghastly game of Red Light, Green Light depicted in the first episode. Moreover, the Season 2 teaser shows more of the action and thrilling drama the show came to be known for.

Hwang Dong-hyuk

In 2008, Dong-hyuk first conceived the story as a feature film and was inspired by his real-world circumstances at that time, as he, his mother, and grandmother struggled financially during the global recession. Furthermore, he wanted the story to bear a message of caution about the pitfalls of capitalist societies and the lengths people will go for their well-being. Despite the promising script, the idea was met with a slew of rejection from actors and production groups that felt the movie was too risky to make.

Moreover, the initial reception prompted Dong-hyuk to set the screenplay aside and develop other projects, which included Silenced (2011) and The Fortress (2017). While Netflix began searching for its next big hit in international regions, Hwang pitched the script to Netflix’s Asia division. Accepted for the same daring nature and creativity that it had been rejected for in the past, it was agreed the story would be transitioned into a series. Additionally, in September 2019, Netflix made the formal announcement that production would begin for the new show.
