The Next Generation of Detectives
New updates regarding the Young Sherlock series have been revealed, giving audiences a better look at who will be accompanying Holmes as he solves his first mystery.
Young Sherlock and Company
Few literary characters seem to routinely undergo new adaptations that try to embody modern twists. It almost feels as if a new Dracula appears on television or in a film every few months. Robin Hood hasn’t been as excessively turned into new media, however that character has been in several films. Arguably, the most famous literary character, Sherlock Holmes, too has faced consistent reimagining for film and television, similar to Dracula. Now, a new series based on the icon is once again being brought to life.
Revealed in an image released last month, Max Irons was cast in a previously unknown role in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming Young Sherlock series. Furthermore, he was shown on set but to whom he was playing was kept a secret. It’s now been revealed that Irons will be portraying Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s older brother, playing opposite Hero Fiennes Tiffin’s Sherlock. Adding to the casting reveal, Irons has been added as a series regular to Young Sherlock.

Mycroft Holmes has been a part of the detective’s story since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original works. Moreover, the character appeared in three short stories written by Doyle, “The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans,” “The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter,” and “The Final Problem.” He was also briefly mentioned in “The Adventure of the Empty House.” Additionally, several actors have brought Mycroft to life across numerous Sherlock Holmes films and television series throughout the years. Some of the prominent actors include Christopher Lee in the 1970s The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, Furthermore, Rhys Ifans in the series Elementary, Hugh Laurie in 2018s Holmes and Watson, Sam Claflin in Enola Holmes, and Mark Gatiss in the BBC series, Sherlock.
Guy Richie and Sherlock Holmes
Attached to the series is Guy Ritchie, who serves as executive producer and director. Moreover, Richie isn’t a novice to the world of Sherlock Holmes. He previously directed the Robert Downey Jr. adaptation, Sherlock Holmes (2009), and its 2011 sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Additionally, Young Sherlock will be a separate project from those two films, and it will not serve as a prequel for Downey’s interpretation.
Inspired by the original works of Doyle, Young Sherlock is based on a series of novels written by Andy Lane. In addition, the Prime Video series will be a re-imaging of the detective, telling the action-packed origin of the beloved literary protagonist. Young Sherlock will follow Holmes in his first-ever case, a murder at Oxford University that will threaten his freedom. Fiennes Tiffin’s interpretation of Sherlock will be raw, unformed, and unfiltered. While Lane’s eight books followed the character in the 1860s and ’70s, there currently are no details regarding the period for the show.
