A Legendary Boxer Receives A Legendary Production
Following the success of Immaculate, Black Bear Pictures has released new information regarding the cast and crew of their upcoming biopic on the ‘90s boxer superstar Christy Martin. Sydney Sweeney will be starring in the untitled film with production starting September 30, 2024, in North Carolina.
Christy Martin’s Fame
Competing from 1989 to 2012, Christy Renea Martin became a familiar name in the boxing world. According to Boxrec, she became the first female boxer to join the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016, was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020, and held only 7 losses in her entire career. However, despite her successful career, it’s not just Martin’s boxing achievements that have led her legacy to the eyes of Hollywood.
Martin’s rollercoaster of a career includes her having to defend her titles, struggling with substance abuse, facing scrutiny from her peers, and living with an absolute monster. David Michôd (known for 2019’s The King) will be directing the drama with Sweeney as the main role. A boxing enthusiast herself, Sweeney told Deadline in May 2024 just how much she looked up to the boxer, “Christy Martin not only legitimized female boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes, and fought through emotional, physical, and financial abuse. I’m passionate about the fighting world. Christy’s story shines a light on her incredible rise to the top while showing the struggles of fame behind the curtains. I feel compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t allow it to defeat her. It’s powerful and emotional.”

What We Know
Though there have been no promo photos to tease the feeling of the film, Michôd told Deadline, “The film is about Christy as a young gay woman in small-town West Virginia in the 1990s. She came from a relatively conservative family and wasn’t allowed to be who she was so she used boxing as a vehicle to express herself and her rage. She had to make some dangerous and fundamental compromises in her life, the most important of which was marrying an incredibly dangerous man.” Black Bear Pictures official site has announced that Ben Foster (Hell or High Water), Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie), Katy O’Brian (Twisters), Ethan Embry (Vegas Vacation), Jess Gabor (Shameless), and Chad L. Coleman (The Walking Dead) will be joining the project. The Michôd and Mirrah Foulkes written script will be produced by Sweeney, Michôd, Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Justin Lothrop, Brent Stiefel, and Teddy Schwarzman.
Until more information is given, potential fans of the film can stream Sweeney’s recent film with Black Bear Pictures titled Immaculate on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.
