The Story Behind The Franchise
I Know What You Did Last Summer is a 1997 horror-thriller that follows a group of four friends—Julie, Ray, Helen, and Barry—whose lives take a dark turn after a tragic accident. After accidentally hitting and seemingly killing a man on a desolate road, the friends decide to cover up the incident by dumping the body into the ocean, vowing to never speak of it again. A year later, they are haunted by their past when an anonymous figure begins to torment them, claiming to know their secret.

As they unravel the mystery of who’s behind the threats, paranoia, and fear intensify, leading them to confront their past mistake in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Directed by Jim Gillespie and loosely based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel, the film became a hit with its suspenseful plot and cast, including Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe, embodying the tension of teens grappling with the consequences of their actions.
Will Sarah Michelle Gellar Return?
Sarah Michelle Gellar will not be reprising her role in the upcoming reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer. When asked about it, Gellar told People, “I am dead,” referencing the fate of her character in the 1997 film. The reboot, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, is set to breathe new life into the iconic horror franchise with a script by Sam Lansky and Robinson, building from a draft by Leah McKendrick. Although plot details remain under wraps, the film is slated for a July 18, 2025, release, with a fresh cast including Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King. Neal Moritz is producing the highly anticipated project.
