‘The Six Triple Eight’ From Tyler Perry Netflix Teaser Released

The Madea Creator Marches to Battle

While Tyler Perry became famous for his satirical comedy films, he is no stranger to branching out. Netflix released the teaser trailer for his WW2 drama, The Six Triple Eight, starring Kerry Washington.

Tyler Perry’s New Movie

According to Deadline, Netflix dropped the teaser trailer for Tyler Perry’s new film, The Six Triple Eight. The historical drama will follow the first and only battalion of women of color to fight in World War II. As shown by the trailer, the film will feature grand battle scenes and personal moments from within America.

The film will also boast an impressive cast, led by Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams and starring Ebony Obsidian, Dean Norris, Susan Sarandon, and even Oprah Winfrey. Perry wrote and directed the film, while Washington, activist Nicole Avant, and Mandalay Pictures produced it. Netflix will release The Six Triple Eight on its streaming service on December 20.

What Was the Six Triple Eight

The film is based on the 2019 article “Fighting A Two-Front War” by historian Kevin M. Hymel for World WWII History Magazine. The “6888” were the first and only unit of women of color to serve overseas during World War II. While they fought in battle, they also played critical support roles, such as delivering vital mail.

Nowadays, they are remembered as heroes who bravely stood against racism and misogyny during America’s time of need. While there is no shortage of WW2 dramas, such as the recent Oppenheimer and Jojo Rabbit, this film has just as important a story to tell.

The Film’s Potential

While Tyler Perry is mostly known as a comedy director, his resume includes films from many genres. His most prominent role is as Mabel “Madea” Earlene Simmons, an elderly grandmother who frequently acts as a comic relief, even in films tackling serious subjects.

Beyond Madea, he also directed more serious works such as Divorce in the Black, A Jazzman’s Blues, and the political drama The Oval on BET. However, his dramatic films tend to get significantly worse receptions than his other works. Given the gravity of this story, Perry can hopefully use his talent and step up as a director.
