Brawl at the Met Gala
Jackie Chan has always had a reputation for being a workhorse. Despite being 70 years old, the action legend is still starring in films, with his latest, Panda Plan, having released earlier in October this year. While still only available in China, people who saw the film say that aside from the slapstick humor, there is also a slew of interesting outfits on display, which makes sense considering Jackie’s reputation for also having an impeccable style. He’s not the only one, however, as two certifiable legends in action cinema, Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, have both long earned their place in the fashion hall of fame. Despite Lee having met his untimely end while his career was still blossoming and Chan having long proved himself, the two still somehow always end up being compared. Both stars have long held their own place on the runway. In this fashion “brawl,” these two action stars will duel it out to determine which of the two is the best-dressed action star. As childish as it may seem, determining who has a better fashion style is comparable to figuring out what kung fu style is stronger, like drunken style versus eagle claw. The battle will consist of three categories and involve the entire catalog of each actor’s list of films.
Jumpsuits
Jackie Chan – In Police Story, Jackie plays a police officer tasked with protecting a key witness in an ongoing case involving a crime boss. One of Chan’s greatest blockbuster successes, the opening sequence for this film is remarkable, with death-defying stunts during a police sting operation that goes wrong. In this sequence, Jackie wears olive green coveralls paired with black low-top Converse for a simple yet timeless look that feels at home given the situation. He also starts with a yellow hard hat, which adds a touch of vibrancy to his ‘fit as a whole.
Bruce Lee – Anyone familiar with Bruce Lee, even in the slightest, will likely imagine him in his iconic yellow jumpsuit if asked to conjure up an image of him in their minds. The image in question comes from the legendary film Game of Death. Released five years after his death, the film follows Lee, who fakes his death to get revenge on those trying to take his life. Lee must defeat a slew of deadly combatants as he ascends a tower. The film’s concept of fighting through a tower and Lee’s yellow jumpsuit have both remained influential throughout the years, including inspiring Uma Thurman’s costume in Kill Bill Vol. 1. The outfit itself remains simple with a yellow athletic jumpsuit and a pair of Onitsuka Tai Chi/ Moonstar Jaguars. This outfit, in particular, was responsible for cementing Lee’s place in fashion history.

Casual Wear
Jackie Chan – Wheels on Meals/Spartan X is one of Chan’s best films in terms of action and slapstick humor. It also, however, displays some of his best ‘fits as well. Joined by Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao, each of them brings their own unique styles to the table. It’s during the final showdown that viewers get to see Jackie’s final outfit.
The ‘fit is composed of black tights with a cloth belt, a multicolored oversized sweater, and a pair of black vans. A couple of scenes later, he ditches the sweater for a tank top with a blue flag belt on his waist. Naturally, since this is still an 80s action movie, fingerless gloves are a must.
Bruce Lee – A certifiable classic that has spun countless sequels and spiritual successors starring the likes of Jackie Chan and Jet Li, the original Fist of Fury/ The Chinese Connection starring Bruce Lee was full of stunning outfits as well as action sequences. In this film, one particular outfit that stands out is his two-piece wing chun outfit. Popularized in the modern day by Donnie Yen in IP Man, Bruce has just as much right to style it as anyone else, considering he was an actual student of the legend himself. Aside from the casual yet elegant garb, he can also be seen sporting a pair of tai chi shoes to round the look off.

Suits
Jackie Chan – Dragons Forever is arguably one of Chan’s best films, starring not only him but also his buddies from his days in opera school, Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung. When he and his friends uncover shady dealings at a local chemical plant, there’s hell to pay with an explosive showdown. Chan plays a lawyer in this film, so he has plenty of suits, but the one he wears during the showdown is hard to forget. With an emphasis on detail simplicity, Jackie is wearing a brownish slate-colored suit and a striped button-down dress shirt and black tie. The stripes on his shirt are subtle, so they can be easy to miss but still add an understated complexity to his look. He can be seen wearing a variety of different shoes, but the best pair has to be his black Vans (the authentic shoe line) paired with white socks, which somehow manage to work.
Bruce Lee – Going back to Fist of Fury/The Chinese Connection, Lee’s outfit during the opening scene is utterly jaw-dropping, with Bruce sporting an all-white mandarin collar suit. A borderline forgotten and underrated look, Lee is so eye-catching in this suit that it can be difficult to follow along with what’s going on. Accents with silver buttons and bits of his baby blue shirt popping through at the collar add a pop to his outfit, which is hard to ignore. Naturally, wearing anything but white shoes would ruin the look, so he finishes everything with a pair of white tennis shoes.

Final Conclusion
Unfortunately, there are more ways that Jackie Chan could not surpass his unofficial mentor. The good news is that this in no way means Chan has no style whatsoever. Both of these action star legends “had it on,” so to speak. If anything, this proves that each of them had their own unique style, which has left a lasting impact on today’s fashion. While Bruce Lee may not have any more films, Chan’s most recent film, Panda Plan (2024), will hopefully soon see a release outside of China.

A lover of gore and over the top violence, no movie can make my stomach squirm. The only thing better than a bloody death scene is a well choreographed stunt. Whether it be action or horror, if it has blood in it, then I've likely already seen it. |
