First Trailer for Prime’s ‘Cruel Intentions’ Reboot

The Romantic Schemes Return

In 1999, the romantic drama Cruel Intentions became an enduring cult classic with its cynical satire. Two decades later, Prime Video has rebooted the saga with a trailer for their upcoming series.

‘Cruel Intentions’ Returns

According to Deadline, the streaming giant Amazon Prime will release a reboot series of the 1999 film Cruel Intentions. The series follows two wealthy, scheming stepsiblings competing to seduce the Vice President’s daughter at a Washington D.C. college, changing the original Upper East Side setting. Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, and Savannah Lee Smith will lead the cast, while Sean Patrick Thomas, who played Ronald Clifford in the original, will return as Professor Chadwick. I Know What You Did Last Summer alumni Phoebe Fisher and Sarah Goodman will oversee the show. Amazon, MGM, and Sony Pictures Television will produce the project. It will premiere on Amazon Prime on November 21 with all eight episodes released that day.

The Original Franchise

Cruel Intentions is a 1999 romantic drama directed by Roger Kumble and starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillipe, and Reese Witherspoon. The film follows a man and his stepsister trying to manipulate a wealthy young woman.

What starts as a simple wager quickly escalates into a web of conflicting plots. Many critics praised the film’s stylish aesthetic and dark subversions of typical romance tropes. While the film was originally an indie production, it was successful enough to spawn a small media franchise, including a prequel, two DVD sequels, and a musical. As such, it was only a matter of time before a major studio brought the series back once more.

The Series’ Potential

The potential of the upcoming series is currently uncertain. The two co-creators’ previous reboot series, I Know What You Did Last Summer, received mediocre reviews. However, rebooting the franchise for a new generation could provide new takes and subversions for the story’s setup. The first film retells the story of a classic 1782 French novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, showing how its ideas stood the test of time. The series will be led by a cast of relative newcomers, meaning the show has the chance to raise new stars. Overall, audiences must wait and see how the show turns out.
