A New Thriller Awaits
One of the biggest actresses in recent Netflix years has been announced to star in a new drama in the next year. The SAG Award winner and Emmy nominee Hoyeon, known most notably for her role in Squid Game, will star alongside Theo James in The Hole. Kim Jee-woon (known for I Saw The Devil and Cobweb) will be directing the indie film that will begin principal photography at the beginning of 2025.
Hoyeon’s Next Adventure
Beginning her career as a freelance model, Hoyeon would eventually become a Louis Vuitton ambassador and make her acting debut with Squid Game (2021), where she became a breakout star. The South Korean model and actress gained global recognition after starring in the drama, earning her prestigious awards and nominations. Her stardom, as well as nostalgia for Theo James (known famously for the Divergent series), will surely shine together in this hard-hitting drama.
Based on Hye-young Pyun’s 2017 Shirley Jackson Award-winning novel and written for the film by Christopher Chen, The Hole tells the story of Owen (portrayed by Theo James), a successful professor living in South Korea as he battles new troubles.
After a life-altering car accident that claims the life of his wife, Sandy (portrayed by Hoyeon), Owen is left bedridden and in the care of his Korean mother-in-law, Yuna. As Yuna begins to uncover the unsettling truths about Owen and Sandy’s marriage, as well as the dark secrets surrounding Owen himself, his path to recovery becomes increasingly complicated.
When to Expect
But there is still time until this project hits the big screen. The film will be produced by Chad Hamilton, Sam Esmail, and Nick Krishnamurthy for Esmail Corp (known for Mr. Robot), along with Andy Sorgie for Paisan, his KPM-backed production company, and Kimberly Steward and Alex Foster for K Period Media (known for 2018’s Suspiria). Jay Choi and Kim Jee-woon are also producing, with Soon Ho Song serving as a co-producer for Anthology Studios.
Filmed in both English and Korean, The Hole will be shot across Korea and the U.S., with principal photography to begin in the spring of 2025. Until more information is released, fans of Hoyeon can stream the critically acclaimed Squid Games on Netflix.
