When A Stage Turns Into A Dance Floor
After Kamala Harris’ surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live just days before the presidential election, fans questioned how the long-successful show would react to the election results. In a shock to the nation, famed comedian Dana Carvey, who had been cast in SNL between 1986 and 1993, returned to portray Elon Musk in a Donald Trump-centered cold open.
Presidential Impersonations
Previously known as portraying President Joe Biden in a 2024 sketch, Dana Carvey made another return to Studio 8H as Musk, a major backer of Trump. The cold open began in an office with Bowen Yang, Ego Nwodim, Kenan Thompson, Colin Jost, Heidi Gardner, Marcello Hernández, and Sarah Sherman solemnly announcing the election result to only be followed with the cast humorously claiming that they had always supported the president-elect, even when others doubted him. Yang declares in the clip, “We have never wavered in our support of you,” with Nwodim adding, “We see ourselves in you,” Nwodim added. “We look at you and think, ‘That’s me”.
Sherman then introduced a new impression: “Hot Jacked Trump,” whereupon James Austin Johnson portrayed his usual Trump impersonation while wearing a muscle suit. Thompson then chimed in, suggesting that if the planet fell apart, they could all escape to Mars with Musk before Carvey’s energetic Musk entered.
Carvey, dressed in an all-black outfit much like Musk’s from a recent Trump rally, jumped onto the stage and shouted, “Check it out — dark MAGA,” pointing to his “Make America Great Again” cap. “I run the country now. America’s like one of my rockets: cool and fun, but there’s a slight chance it could blow up and everyone dies.” The sketch ended with a playful rendition of the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.” with Carvey’s Musk and Johnson’s “Hot Jacked Trump” joining in.
More Carvey In The Future
Audiences expected Carvey to only appear in a few SNL sketches this year after his portrayal of Biden near the end of the election, but the comedy show had other plans. Musk put a lot of time and money into Trump’s campaign and is likely to continue a close relationship with the next president as time goes on. This brings hope for Carvey fans toward the possibility of seeing him portray Musk again. Though there is no official word yet on whether the Emmy-winning actor will sign on for more SNL appearances, fans should keep their eyes peeled for any news. SNL can be seen live on NBC and streamed on Peacock.
