Film's Launch Event Faces Significant Changes
Disney’s Snow White hits theaters this month, which typically means a grand red carpet-premiere. However, due to ongoing controversies, Disney is keeping the event low-key, limiting it to select photographers and the house crew.
Rachel Zegler & Peter Dinklage Interview
When it was announced that the red carpet would be limited to a few house crew members and photographers, the studio remained silent on the matter but had backup plans in place amid the controversy. The controversy began when toxic Disney fans learned that Latino actress Rachel Zegler, known for West Side Story, was cast as Snow White in the live-action remake. Zegler stirred up further backlash when she criticized the 1937 original, calling it “dated” and claiming, “the prince literally stalks Snow White.” At D23 two years ago, Variety interviewed Rachel Zegler about the Snow White remake. She shared her perspective on the character, stating, “She’s not going to be saved by the prince. She’s not going to be dreaming about true love. She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be.”
In January 2024, during a WTF with Marc Maron podcast, Peter Dinklage criticized the film for reinforcing negative stereotypes about little people. “Literally no offense to anything, but I was sort of taken aback. They were very proud to cast a Latino actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there.”
Disney’s Response
After Peter Dinklage’s interview, Disney responded with a statement to Good Morning America, saying, “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community.”
Zegler also addressed the backlash, attributing it to fans’ deep connection to the original film. In a March interview with Vogue Mexico, she elaborated, saying, “I interpret people’s sentiments towards this film as passion. What an honor to be a part of something that people feel so passionately about. We’re not always going to agree with everyone who surrounds us and all we can do is our best.” (Variety translated this portion from Spanish to English.)
