‘You’(2025): A Series Review

Joe Goldberg: Being in Love is the Most Dangerous Thing

You can be a highly addictive show, especially due to Joe, the main character, because he affects the viewer by drawing the audience in to get to know his story and goals. Netflix’s You series was based on the novel of the same name by Caroline Kepnes. It was published in September 2014 and later became a series adaptation in September 2018, developed by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble. It’s a psychological thriller series about a man named Joe Goldberg who is extremely dangerous, charming, and intensely obsessive. He becomes fixated on women who capture his heart, and goes to extreme measures to force himself into their lives, always ending with deadly consequences.

The Dangerous Mind of Joe Goldberg

Each season of “You” follows Joe as he navigates new relationships and locations, trying to create the perfect romance, yet his obsessive behavior and traumatic past in his childhood constantly haunt him, as well as his issues with the woman he falls in love with. As Joe tries his hardest to control his dark urges and compose his ideal image, he continues to leave a trail of destruction and chaos in his path. The series explores themes of love, obsession, identity crises, and the dark side of human nature, all while keeping the audience guessing what’s going to happen next. Joe Goldberg’s character development is a twisted exploration of love and obsession. He starts as a normal guy; however, his issues lead him down a dark path. Throughout the series, Joe’s actions become more intense, and he balances himself between choosing to be a hero or a killer. Despite his efforts to change, he keeps acting on the same patterns over and over again, developing a never-ending cycle. The show began with Joe working as a bookstore manager in New York City, and he became obsessed with an aspiring writer named Guinevere Beck, with whom he immediately fell in love from the moment he laid his eyes on her. They both start with conversations about their love for books after she brings a book from his recommendation when she leaves the bookstore.

After Joe’s encounter with Beck, he decided to stalk her after he learned her information, and that’s where it began. Once Joe sets his heart on someone, he takes extreme measures in the name of love.
