Star of Spider-Man and Spaghetti Westerns Dies
Jack Fillmore Betts was an American actor and author who died peacefully in his sleep at age 96 on June 19 at his home in Los Osos, California. He performed in film, on stage, and on television. Jack played key roles in films like the Spaghetti Western Sugar Colt (1966) and later appeared in Spider-Man (2002). Jack Betts’ death was a result of complications related to heart disease, according to Deadline.
What You Don’t Know About Jack Betts
Betts and his family moved from New Jersey, where he was born, to Miami, Florida, when he was 10 years old. Betts studied theatre at the University of Miami after graduating from Miami Senior High School. In 1953, he moved to New York City, where he made his Broadway debut in a supporting role in William Shakespeare’s play, Richard III. Betts was working in a lamp factory when his friend asked him to do a scene together for an audition at The Actors Studio, a famous nonprofit owned by Lee Strasberg. And because his performance caught Strasberg’s attention, he was given a 3-year scholarship. The admired Elia Kazan added him to the cast of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. He returned to Broadway for Kazan’s 1959 production of Sweet Bird of Youth, and in the late 1970s, he appeared in a revival of Dracula, occasionally filling in for Raúl Juliá as Count Dracula.
America Lost a Star
In 1959, Betts got his first film credit in The Bloody Brood. The first time Betts took credit for the stage name Hunt Powers was in his role as the main character in Franco Giraldi’s Sugar Colt. That opened the gates to credits for several Spaghetti Westerns throughout the 1970s. Betts’ appearances grew even more on television shows and daytime soaps, which include General Hospital, The Young Marrieds, The Edge of Night, The Doctors, Another World, All My Children, Falcon Crest, Search for Tomorrow, Guiding Light, Generations, and The Young and the Restless.
Some of his dramatic performances are also featured in episodes of Perry Mason and The F.B.I., as well as popular series such as Gunsmoke, Seinfeld, Mad TV, Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond, Friends, The Mentalist, and Monk. Betts and Doris Roberts from Everybody Loves Raymond became close friends. They met at The Actors Studio back in the 1950s and lived together from the late 1980s until her death in 2016.
Jack Betts’ legacy is not built on trophies or awards but on his unshakable focus on his craft. According to an interview with the Dev Show, he said, “creativity is my lifeline, and as long as I have that going for me, I can be anything in the world.” For Jack, there was more to life than awards. In 2000, at the Brooklyn Film Festival, Jack received a second-place festival award for Outstanding Acting (male) for his performance in True Rights. In a time when there was no internet, getting an audition was highly competitive. But Jack said in the same interview that as long as an actor keeps showing up in snow, sleet, or sun, there was a great chance to get called in for an audition.
Betts’ Role In ‘Spider-Man’
Betts’ performance in Spider-Man as the Chairman of the Oscorp Technologies board can never go unnoticed. He demonstrated his role confidently when he said to William Dafoe’s Norman Osborn, “you’re out, Norman,” evicting the villain from the executive board. At one point later, Osborn throws the line back at Balkan (played by Jack Betts) during his attack in Times Square, grinning wickedly as he blasts the board and says, “Out, am I?” More of his movies are 1993’s Falling Down with Michael Douglas and Robert Duvall, the 1995 Val Kilmer-starring Batman Forever, and 1998’s Gods and Monsters opposite Ian McKellen and Brendan Fraser.
And So It Goes
Fans and enthusiasts honored Jack Betts’ legacy on social media. One user wrote on his Instagram status, “Jack Betts was one of those actors who could make even a B-movie feel like an A-list production.” Another user wrote, “A very nice man. I worked with him on Search For Tomorrow back in 1986. They tried to pair him with the show’s matriarch but she wouldn’t play the scenes so they shifted his love interest over to the wonderful Anita Gillette.”
