‘Superpowered: The DC Story’ (2023): A Review

The Pioneer of the Cape

Superpowered: The DC Story is a 3-part docuseries narrated by Rosario Dawson. The series takes the audience through the successes and failures of over 85 years. Explore the origin stories of DC’s legendary heroes like Superman and Batman, learn the impact of Wonder Woman for women across the globe, and discover the history behind the introduction of DC’s first black superhero, Black Lightning. Superpowered: The DC Story features countless other historic moments as they evolve through the ever-changing scenery of media and pop culture. This docuseries includes interviews with DC’s creators and actors where the crew explains the battles DC had to overcome to soar far and above, showcasing its resilience to remain relevant.

Up, Up, & Away!

Superpowered: The DC Story time-travels to the past, where the founder of National Allied Publications got his start in 1934. Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, an officer in World War 1, wrote stories of real-life events about his war experiences. In the year 1937, National Allied Publications would release Detective Comics issue #1, which would lay the groundwork for what would later become DC Comics. This would transcend the comic industry forever. This shows the viewers that this high-flying docuseries will spare no detail in its origin story. The series presents voice recordings from a 1981 BBC interview with writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster. They recap being high schoolers who created the first drafts of the iconic superhero known today as the symbol of hope, Superman, in 1933. The two explain how the character came about and the traits from themselves that were incorporated.

Be prepared, this docuseries makes significant jumps through the past and present as the viewers learn of DC’s troubles and triumphs through history. DC’s creators and writers show transparency on the topic of their rival Marvel, pushing them to reconstruct origin stories and revamp characters, bringing the outer world in which they thrived to consist of more down-to-earth, relatable concepts. Through this 3-part documentary, the recurring topic DC faced was its battle with the rise of pop culture and media, ultimately confronting a double-edged sword in the end.

Everyone’s a Hero

As viewers experience DC’s historic events, Dawson’s narration keeps viewers engaged through the series, while interviews with creators, actors, and directors express the contributors’ attachment to the heroes and the impact these heroes had on their lives. Actor Zachary Levi, who starred as the titular character in Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, explains how he was able to touch base with his inner child for the role.

Directors Leslie Iwerks and Mark Catalena managed to produce a great mix of history, fan service, and nostalgia for DC’s core fans while leaving the door open to welcome a new audience. The perspectives from early creators, writers, and artists, along with modern directors and actors, create successful storytelling in this series. Geoff Johns, writer of Aquaman, is a great example of this. In his interview, he speaks of the backlash received from people claiming the character was a waste of time. His reimagined view of the Sea King would be the blueprint for Aquaman starring Jason Momoa. From Adam West’s comical portrayal in Batman to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, DC shows it can adjust and grow with its audience. Although Nolan’s Batman trilogy is a box office slugger, grossing worldwide $2.492 billion, it left DC Comics in the cold with no direction until writer Johns boarded the sinking ship, rebooting the DC Comics universe with Flashpoint. This led to its new comic book line, The New 52, in 2011.

Wham, Blam, Pow!

Adding frequent stops on DC’s timeline, viewers can take in the ’60s groovy sounds of West’s Batman theme song as he takes the streets of Gotham and the ’70s heroic symphony as Christopher Reeve’s Superman glides through the city of Metropolis. Add in Dawson’s narration, capturing every event in this series as if it were happening in front of her, and viewers are in for a “wham, blam, pow!” themselves. Superpowered: The DC Story consists of interviews while adding previous comic artwork, clips of past shows like Superfriends, and behind-the-scenes of movies like Tim Burton’s Batman. Fans’ reactions in real time when DC released The Death of Superman comic in the early 90s were captivating. The series includes archived footage of interviews and news reports of comic book fans’ reactions of unhappiness and shock around the country that the Man of Steel was gone. It stays true to its superhero narrative through and through.

A New Tomorrow

Mixing storytelling and action, this docuseries is engaging and entertaining for all ages. It brings back childhood memories while providing new knowledge about DC’s 85 years of history for established fans. At the same time, it draws in those who may not know where to begin in their comic journey. This is a celebration of DC’s legacy with a clear message that one doesn’t have to be super to be a hero.
