Sweet Revenge: Summer of Vorhees

Celebrate 45 Years of Terror

Let’s dub this the summer of Vorhees. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Friday the 13th series, and Horror Inc.’s Jason Verse is commemorating it with Sweet Revenge.

No one made camping as terrifying as Vorhees. Clad in a tattered jumpsuit and a battered hockey mask, he showed no mercy, unleashing vengeance on campers with extreme prejudice. He wasn’t just a figment of nightmares; he was a living nightmare. He marched his way into the history of horror as the ultimate boogeyman, a symbol of terror, silent yet utterly lethal.

The Terror Continues

It’s been several years since the last Friday the 13th movie came out. The franchise’s last film, released in 2009, was a remake. Fans familiar with the long-standing series knew what to anticipate; the formula was consistent—a classic slasher from start to finish. As an EW contributor pointed out, “Among all the modern reboots of iconic horror franchises, Friday the 13th actually stands out the best.” With horror series, it’s never truly the end. There’s always the possibility of the boogeyman’s return. It seems a revival is on the horizon with a new short film titled Sweet Revenge.

The Talent Behind Sweet Revenge

Mike P. Nelson is the driving force behind the project. According to a press release from Horror Inc., he was chosen by the original franchise owners. Nelson, a long-time fan of the series, expressed his excitement: “Thirty years ago, I was sneaking around to watch these movies on VHS when no one was looking. Now, having the chance to write and direct one of these stories feels surreal.” This is a significant advantage, as long-time fans who deeply engage with the material they aim to expand upon have a profound understanding of its history, heart, and soul, providing them with ample inspiration.

Nelson has demonstrated his talent for this genre with his involvement in projects like The Domestics (2018) and Wrong Turn (2021). The latter was described in the release as a film with raw, grounded terror and relentless tension, essential elements for a franchise and, more specifically, an expansion of this nature.

Pushing it Forward

While Sweet Revenge is part of the existing franchise, it promises a unique twist. According to the release, “This vignette offers a fresh perspective on the beloved IP, delivering a comforting yet gory embrace that reminds us why we fell for these movies.” Horror enthusiasts can rally behind this homage to the genre that captured our hearts. This is just a glimpse of what lies ahead for the franchise and its loyal fans. New features include an updated design, a significant collaboration, and a prequel series. It was noted, “The franchise unveiled a brand-new Jason Voorhees design by the renowned FX artist Greg Nicotero, announced Jason’s return to Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights after nearly ten years, and continued the development of A24’s eagerly awaited Crystal Lake series.”

Celebrate With Sweet Revenge

This entire endeavor is made possible by Horror Inc.’s collaboration with Angry Orchard, which is acting as the sponsor. The original owners of the film franchise own Horror Inc. This initiative is part of their 2024 Jason Universe, aiming to further develop the intellectual property. Production on Sweet Revenge started just this month. Once released, fans can watch it on two different platforms: a Microsite hosted by Angry Orchard Hard Cider and the official Jason Universe YouTube channel. Although not entirely anticipated, this project is a welcome addition, solidifying the Friday the 13th franchise’s reputation as the gift that keeps on giving.
