‘F1’ (2025): A Review

A Film On Pace for Success

This movie has a lot of twists and turns, figuratively and literally. The movie is a racing thriller, where moviegoers can see high-speed racing at its finest. F1 is about Formula One racing. Formula One racing is a specific kind of high-speed open-wheel racing. F1 goes into what it’s like to be a racer behind the wheel, and what racers go through to get to the top. The story is a classic tale of a mentor and an apprentice, featuring both working together to achieve a common goal.

A Plot with Creative Turns

Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) is a veteran driver with a history of injuries. People are telling Hayes to hang it up, but Hayes refuses. When it seems like Hayes has finally decided to give up on racing, he is later offered the chance to form a racing team with an up-and-coming racer. APXGP is a racing team owned by Ruben Cervantes (Javier Barden), and Cervantes is desperately trying to assemble a team to compete in F1. This is where Joshua Pearce is introduced. Pearce, played by Damson Idris, is a young racer with great talent. Both Hayes and Pearce form a bond over time and try to win it all together. This is where most of the character development happens. Pearce is a cocky showman full of swagger. On the other hand, Hayes is gritty, clever, and a bit conflicted. Later, Kate McKenna shows up as the technical director for the team. McKenna, played by Kerry Condon, plays a big role in the team’s success and is a key character development point within the movie. She brings romance into the movie, which adds depth. She also helps the APXGP racing team gel as a whole.

A Racing Masterpiece

The focus of F1 is on the interactions between Brad Pitt and Damson Idris. The classic mentor-protégé relationship is done perfectly here. Pitt and Idris’ characters do not get along well at the start of the movie. As the movie progresses, both Hayes and Pearce realize that teaming up can lead to success. Hayes learns to adapt to the modern era. He is old school. Times have changed since Hayes was a young racer. Pearce helps Hayes get up to speed. Hayes sees a young version of himself in Pearce. When watching the movie, it is easy to tell that Haye’s passion for racing is reignited through Pearce. The chemistry between the two main actors is the engine of the movie. Kerry Condon plays an amazing supporting role in this film. Condon’s character McKenna helps gel the team throughout the movie. McKenna also helps Hayes find another reason for winning. The connection between McKenna and Hayes brings in a nice twist to the film. The chemistry between them can be felt throughout the movie.

Javier Bardem plays the role of the team owner well. Barden’s character Ruben Cervantes is all about trying to find a way to compete against the competition. Cervantes’s F1 team is an underdog. Viewers can feel just how tough the competition is throughout the movie. That is because Cervantes sells the idea of the small team owner hungry to take down giants.

Joseph Kosinski Controls from The Cockpit

Joseph Kosinski pulled out all the stops for F1. The director is not a newcomer to making big hits. Kosinski is known for action films. Directing action blockbusters such as Top Gun: Maverick (2022) and Tron: Legacy (2010) made Kosinski a perfect fit for this movie. Kosinski has worked with flying planes and fast futuristic bikes. Kosinski’s previous work is clearly demonstrated in this film. The POV scenes from Top Gun: Maverick were a major factor in the film’s success. In F1, Kosinski made POV racing scenes a big part of the film. This gives the film a sense of reality. Kosinski brought in real racers to blur the lines between cinema and reality. Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz Jr., Sergio Pérez, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, and Fernando Alonso were all cameos within the film. Seeing these real-life star racers in the movie makes moviegoers feel as if the racetrack is in the movie theater. Lewis Hamilton is a known F1 star in real life and helped Kosinski as a producer. This clearly helped make the film as realistic as possible. Kosinski wasn’t the only mastermind behind the scenes in F1.

Cinematic Racing Meets Adrenaline-Pumping Sounds

Claudio Miranda put on a show with his cinematography. Miranda is known for his work on Life of Pi (2012). He demonstrated why he is an award-winning cinematographer with his breathtaking shots in F1. He captured real racing footage to give viewers a realistic experience. Miranda took footage in many circuits throughout the Formula One racing series. Miranda used real footage from races to enhance the movie’s realism.

Hans Zimmer gets the heart pumping with an action-packed musical number. Zimmer, the composer for the film, did not hold back with the lineup brought to the soundtrack of the film. Doja Cat, Ed Sheeran, Tate McRae, ROSÉ, and even Burna Boy fill a star-studded soundtrack. The combination of great visuals and an electrifying musical track gives moviegoers more reasons to see the film. “Elbows Out” is a track played during a tense part of a race. When cars are clashing, Zimmer uses engine-like synths and orchestral background sounds to bring the racing scenes alive.

The Final Lap

The movie did exactly what it was cut out to do: provide a thrilling racing experience, one that is memorable and realistic. Brad Pitt and Damson Idris gave spectacular performances. Miranda, Zimmer, and Kosinski worked hard to give viewers a true racing experience. This gives moviegoers an experience they can feel.
