Villeneuve’s Plans for the Next ‘Dune’
Denis Villeneuve, the filmmaker of Dune, has officially titled the return to Arrakis Dune: Part Three. Fans of this franchise and even reporters had called the film Dune Messiah because of the book Frank Herbert wrote with the same name in 1969, which shares a similar storyline with Dune.
The Visual Intentions
Production of Dune: Part Three has already begun with Timothèe Chalamet and Zendaya resuming their original roles. It has also been confirmed that Jason Momoa will be returning for Dune: Part Three, even though he featured in Part One, he didn’t appear in Part Two. According to Variety, it is believed that a series of scenes in Dune: Part Three will be shot with IMAX cameras. But not the whole film will be shot with IMAX cameras, only a few key scenes. Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey is the first and only movie ever to shoot its entire scenes with IMAX cameras. IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond said in a CNBC interview that the upcoming Dune will be entirely shot with the company’s very own cameras, but he said that mistakenly.
To Shed More Light
Toward the end of the interview, Gelfond was asked whether Villeneuve had been hired by Amazon MGM Studios to direct a new version of the Bond franchise.
The executive also mentioned that Villeneuve will start working on Dune: Part Three for Warner Bros and Legendary before he begins the new Bond franchise. According to Variety, Gelfond said about the Bond hiring, “From a personal point of view, I was really happy. I like him. I think he’s a genius filmmaker.” In the previous year, Villeneuve said the upcoming Dune franchise won’t be the completion of the trilogy. “First, people need to understand that for me, the first two Dune films were meant to go together as one story,” Villeneuve said. “The first two films were supposed to be one complete adaptation of the first Dune book. That part is done and finished. If I make a third film, which I’m currently writing, it won’t just be part of a trilogy. It might sound strange, but it will be to create something that feels new and has its own style.”
Surprising Facts About ‘Dune: Part Three’
Momoa made it known to the public in March 2025 that he would resume his role as Duncan Idaho from the first Dune. The following month, word about Robert Pattinson being eyed for a role was heard. Chalamet, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh return to continue from the previous films. It was recently announced in June 2025 that Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke would be cast as Leto II and Ghanima Atreides in Dune: Part Three.
Dune: Part Three is set to be released on December 18, 2026.
