Chris Pratt is confirmed to be reprising his role as the iconic orange cat in the sequel to last year’s The Garfield Movie. Alcon Entertainment is producing the sequel with distribution by Sony Entertainment.
Lasagna Loving Lead
Alcon acquired the rights to Garfield from original creator Jim Davis, who will be serving as executive producer on the sequel alongside Bridget McMeel from Amuse. Along with Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, John Cohen and Steven P. Wagner will also serve as producers. With the announcement of Pratt’s signing on Tuesday, he will also be serving the role of producer on the film. Prime Focus Studios, Namit Malhotra’s production company, will co-produce the film alongside Alcon Entertainment. Malhotra is also serving as a producer. DNEG Animation is an animation partner for the film, returning after the success of the studio’s work on the first movie. Producers are in talks with potential writers and directors for the sequel and will be announcing additional casting soon.
Comic to Cartoon
Davis’s original Garfield comic strip debuted in June 1978, following the titular large and lazy orange cat and his owner Jon Arbuckle, and fellow pet Odie, the dog. These iconic characters starred in The Garfield Movie, which was released in May 2024 and grossed more than $260 million worldwide. The Garfield Movie and its sequel are the first movies in the Garfield series since Garfield’s Pet Force from 2009.
The voice cast for The Garfield Movie, directed by Mark Dindal, included Samuel L. Jackson, Hannah Winningham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, Snoop Dogg, and others. Pratt is the only cast member to be announced for the sequel. Jeannette Hill, EVP Business and Legal Affairs at Alcon Entertainment, negotiated the deal with Pratt’s reps of UTA, Rise Management, and Sloan Offer Weber Dern on behalf of the company.
