To Save Her Sister, She Risks Everything
The Occupant is a sci-fi thriller about a lady who wasn’t ready to let her sister die of cancer, so she accepts a suicidal but lucrative job to finance the care of her sister in a risky experiment.
What Is It About?
The Occupant follows the story of a woman who’s extremely desperate to save her sister. Abby (Ella Balinska), a British geologist, takes a deadly job in the remote part of the Georgian hinterland. After losing her mother recently, losing her sister Beth (Vanessa Ifediora) to terminal cancer wasn’t an option for her. Abby wants Beth to live longer, and so Abby ignores the diagnosis of the nurse (Sheena Kelly), their father (Stuart Graham), and even Beth, who already accepted her fate and wanted to make the most out of the little time she had on earth. Abby decided to put Beth in expensive yet experimental care that she believes will extend her sister’s life. The high cost of her sister’s medical care forced her to embark on a dangerous assignment from her job to search for uranium deposits on the Russian Border of Georgia. But when her chopper is destroyed in a crash, her survival instincts are awakened.
‘The Occupant’ vs Other Thrillers
While survival thrillers plotted in extreme conditions are nothing new, The Occupant stands out because of its unsettling twist of genre. The Occupant is not the typical woman versus nature conflict–there’s something deeper at play. As Abby struggles to stay alive in the wilderness of Russia, she comes in contact with John (Rob Delaney), an American pilot.
Their connection grows as he guides her through the unfriendly terrains, but skepticism begins to creep in as her trust for him experiences a setback.
The Occupant is written by Philip Michael Howe, Hugo Keijzer, Roelof Jan Minneboo, and Xia Tang. Directed by Hugo Keijzer, the film stars Balinska, Graham, Ifediora, and Delaney.
The Driving Force Behind ‘The Occupant’
As reported by Cinemachords, when asked about his personal motivations behind the film, Keijzer said, “With The Occupant, I set out to construct a narrative that addresses a difficult and deeply personal theme, wrapped within the genre conventions of a sci-fi thriller. At its core, this is the story of a young person’s journey toward accepting the inevitable death of her sister whom she loves more than anything in her life…This could have made for a compelling kitchen sink drama, but because of the specific nature of Abby’s character and my desire to make this story accessible to a wider audience, her journey take us on a physical rollercoaster ride through uninhabitable terrain, to the brink of death, and down a dark place where she’s offered the most difficult choice of her life.”
Get Ready
According to Cinemachords, “The Occupant is the culmination of more than seven years of work,” Keijzer explained. “We developed the story through pitches at festivals (Sitges, Bifan), created a short film prologue (which garnered millions of online fans), and received valuable input from the Netherlands Film Fund to strike the right balance between drama and genre.”
The Occupant will be available in theaters on August 8.
