Native American Myths and Murder
According to Deadline, Hulu is adapting a true-crime audiobook for its next documentary on the streaming service. The audiobook Midnight Son, created by James Dommek Jr., Isaac Kestenbaum, and Josie Holtzman, will be adapted for screens with the title Blood & Myth.
A Blend of Fact and Folklore
Midnight Son was released in 2019. The official description states, “James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe called Iñukuns that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.”
In Western courts, Smith’s tale of Iñukuns fell on deaf ears.
Dommek, the great-grandson of the last of the Iñupiaq storytellers, knew the frightening stories of “the little people,” whose existence is accepted as fact by Northern Native communities and supported by first-person accounts and sightings. Haunted by the story, Dommek embarks on a journey back to Alaska to discover the secrets hidden in the mountains. Fact and fiction collide in his search for the answers. Was it possible that those myths from his childhood were true? Through the audiobook, listeners follow Dommek’s years-long journey to unravel the mysteries behind the violent crimes and the mythical Iñukuns.
True-Crime to Television
The adaptation Blood & Myth is directed by Kahlil Hudson and produced by Jonas Bell Pasht and Jonah Bekhor for Citizen Jones. Dommek exec produces alongside Isaac Kestenbaum, Jose Holtzman, and Hudson. Mike Langer and Derek Doneen serve as co-executive producers.
Watch Blood & Myth, premiering September 4th on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ in English-speaking territories internationally. Stay tuned for more information from Dead Talk News.
