‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Debuts No. 1 in the UK

Taking a Giant Leap Over the Competition

In 2015, 20th Century Fox rebooted The Fantastic Four. The film was supposed to dawn a new age for 20th Century Fox. The film did bring something to filmgoers: utter disappointment. With a jaw-dropping 9% critic score and an 18% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film became infamous for all the wrong reasons. Now, a decade later, Marvel Studios unveils its rendition. It’s smashing the box office in the UK. However, what do the numbers look like, and how is the audience responding now after all these years?

A Fantastical Debut

According to Variety, The Fantastic Four: First Steps had a debut of £8.1 million ($10.8 million). This moment marks a successful launch for Marvel Studios. The U.K. isn’t the only region where the film performed well. Box Office Mojo reports a global total of $241 million. This number includes $142 million from domestic sales and $99 million from international markets. These numbers underscore the significance of The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ U.K. opening for Marvel Studios. That $10.8 million from the U.K. is about a 10th of all international earnings. So financially, the film is thriving.

Praised by Moviegoers

According to Rotten Tomatoes, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has an audience score of 92% and an 86% critic score. These numbers help explain why so many people are heading to the theatres to see the film. Fans are loving it. One wrote on Rotten Tomatoes, “Marvel is back in their A game!!”, while another called it “One of the best Marvel movies to come out.” These reactions signal that audiences are thrilled to see Marvel return to top form.

Critics are also impressed. David Sims from the Atlantic stated, “As an effort to breathe new life into a particularly moribund title, First Steps is essentially successful. What it somehow can’t manage to do is have much of a good time in the process.” Sims makes a valid point, especially considering the poorly received 2015 rendition of the film. This latest edition, however, had been well received by critics and moviegoers alike.

Marvel’s Magic is Back Again

The film is selling well, and the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. According to FandomWire, it needs $500 million to break even, and it’s on track to reach more than half of that total after this weekend. With streaming services and additional theatrical weeks ahead, Marvel has a real shot at turning a profit. Only time will tell if they succeed.
