‘KPop Demon Hunters’ (2025): A Review

Huntr/x Is Here To Show The World How It’s Done!

Sony Animation, the studio behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse, is back with another buzzworthy hit, KPop Demon Hunters, with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans as the directors. The film follows Huntr/x, a fierce all-girl K-pop group made up of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. On the surface, they’re global pop sensations, but behind the scenes, they’re elite demon hunters. Hunters that protect their fans from soul-stealing demons working under the command of the dark ruler, Gwi-Ma.

To keep the world safe, the girls must perform not just on stage, but in battle. Using their music to power the Hoomon, a magical barrier that keeps demons at bay. But when a rival K-pop boy band called Saja Boys turns out to be demons in disguise, they emerge and target their fans. Huntr/x must then fight harder than ever to stop them before it’s too late.

Happy Fans, Happy Hoomon!

KPop Demon Hunters is an animated musical fantasy film that follows three girls named Rumi, Mira, and Zoey who are K-pop stars that go by Huntr/x. While these girls may look like an everyday average all-girl K-pop group, they are also living a double life as Demon Hunters. Their mission is to maintain a barrier that can stop demons from coming up to the surface. The demons, called the Hoomon, have been around for generations, hunted by others before them. Not only that, but if they can get the Hoomon golden, that will permanently banish demons for good! Fresh off their world tour, the girls are preparing to drop their new album, Golden, hoping it will provide the final push needed to make the Hoomon golden and protect everyone on the surface.

When the lead singer, Rumi, starts to lose her voice because of her dark past, things start to go downhill. Danger strikes when Gwi-Ma, the demon ruler, is persuaded by a clever demon named Jinu to form a rival all-boy K-pop group called the Saja Boys. If Jinu’s plan is successful, he wants the dark voices and the memoirs of his human life erased. With the Hoomon barrier weakening and their fans’ lives at risk, Rumi and the rest of Huntr/x must rise to the challenge. But as they face off against the Saja Boys, Rumi must also confront the inner demons threatening to expose her past and silence her for good.

We are Hunters, Voices Strong!

Since the film blends music and storytelling, it’s only fitting to cast not just talented voice actors, but skilled singers as well. The main cast includes Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), Bobby (Ken Jeong), Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop), and Gwi-Ma (Lee Byung-hun). Many of these names will be familiar to fans. Arden Cho is best known for her role as Kira Yukimura in Teen Wolf. Ji-young Yoo made her film debut in Netflix’s Moxie. Ken Jeong is a fan favorite for his comedic roles as Leslie Chow in The Hangover series and Ben Chang from NBC’s Community. Ahn Hyo-seop, a singer from the group One O One, is also recognized for his performances in Seasons 2 and 3 of Dr. Romantic. Finally, Lee Byung-hun, a mastermind in Korean cinema, starred in Seasons 2 and 3 of Netflix’s Squid Game.

Together, these voices bring the characters to life with a perfect mix of entertainment, emotion, and power, making every moment on screen unforgettable.

Of course, we can’t forget the singers who made the movie’s music truly unforgettable! Both Huntr/x and the Saja Boys get audiences moving and grooving with their electrifying performances, brought to life by an incredible lineup of vocal talent. EJAE, the singing voice of Rumi, has an impressive track record, having worked with top South Korean groups such as Red Velvet, NMIXX, LE SSERAFIM, and aespa. Audrey Nuna (Audrey Chu), who provides Mira’s singing voice, is an American singer known for hits like Damn Right and Comic Sans. Rei Ami (Sarah Yeeun Lee), the voice behind Zoey’s singing, is both an American singer and voice actor, best known for her 2020 viral hit Freak, which gained massive attention on TikTok. As for the Saja Boys, their lead vocals come from Andrew Choi, the singing voice of Jinu. While this role has brought him international recognition, he first made waves by finishing in third place on SBS’s K-pop Star Season 2.

The Music is Going Up, Up, Up on the Charts!

The music of KPop Demon Hunters is one of the biggest reasons the film has captured audiences’ hearts, and what many fans love most about it. According to Official Charts.com, the hit single “Golden” recently made history as the first K-pop song to reach #1 in 13 years, following PSY’s “Gangnam Style” in 2012. WhileGolden” slipped to #2 this week, the Saja Boys are making waves too, with their tracks “Soda Pop” landing at #6 and “Your Idol” at #8. The film’s soundtrack has proven just as powerful, with six songs making it onto the Billboard Hot 100. Both “Golden” and “Your Idol” have held spots in the top 10 for several weeks.

While many music writers contributed to the soundtrack, two key creatives at the heart of it are Mark Sonnenblick and EJAE. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the pair shared their excitement about the music’s success. “It’s crazy! Unbelievable,” EJAE said over Zoom from her home studio in New York. “Has any songwriter been like, ‘It’s charting? What a disaster!” Sonnenblick added with a laugh. “We loved the songs and believed in the music. It’s just a testament to the hundreds of people who worked on this film. The film supports the music. The music supports the film. It’s amazing.” Each song has meaning behind it and is always getting better as the movie progresses. Besides the animation and the story, the music is what helped Kpop Demon Hunters to be in Netflix’s top 5 most-watched movies.
