Reckless Spending Leaves ‘47 Ronin’ Director Broke Before Trial
47 Ronin director Carl Rinsch is facing charges of fraud and money laundering. His trial is set to start in a month over allegations that he tried to cheat Netflix out of over $11 million.
Rinsch Can’t Afford a Flight Ticket
A month before Rinsch’s fraud and money laundering trial, which allegedly involved scamming Netflix bosses Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters out of $11 million, was first set to begin in New York City. The 47 Ronin director appeared to be as broke as he claimed during his arrest in March in Los Angeles when he posted a $100,000 bond to avoid confinement. According to the Department of Justice, it became known that Rinsch did not complete his White Horse/Conquest drama series. Now, just weeks before the filmmaker’s trial, his public defender says Rinsch can’t get himself from L.A. to the Big Apple for his hearing because he has no money.
The U.S. Marshals Intervention
Surprisingly, the federal judge is unconcerned by Rinsch’s financial status. According to Deadline, it was “Ordered that the United States Marshals Service arrange for Mr. Rinsch’s means of noncustodial transportation from Los Angeles, California to New York, New York, or furnish the fare for such transportation for Mr. Rinsch’s court appearance, scheduled for August 19, 2025, at 4 PM.” District Judge Jed Rakoff on Monday after receiving a request from the director’s publicly provided attorney, wrote, “It is hereby ordered that it should be arranged for Mr. Rinsch to arrive in New York by the evening of August 18, 2025; and it is hereby further ordered that the aforesaid expenses shall be paid by the United States Marshals Service.”
Rinsch’s Charges
Rinsch will be facing multiple charges. If found guilty, jail could be his home for decades. Initially, his trial was supposed to commence on September 8, but it has been postponed to December 2 at 9:30 am at the federal courthouse at 500 Pearl Street. As of this moment, no witness list has been created, but Deadline predicts that ex-Netflix exec Cindy Holland, Sarandos, and 47 Ronin star Keanu Reeves will testify. In 2018, Holland allegedly gave Rinsch $61 million for the production of White Horse, now known as Conquest. After spending $44 million on the project, Rinsch requested another $11 million in 2020 for various pre-and post-production needs to finalize the series. Netflix did as he requested.
Rinsch is accused of lavishing the money on cars, crypto, lawyers, expensive watches, and other activities. Rinsch lost the dispute and was ordered to pay a $12 million reward to Netflix. But the filmmaker changed the plot by bringing up the $14 million debt Netflix owes him. According to JoBlo, Rinsch will plead not guilty to the charges.
