Fun and Romance Meet The Big Screen
Coming to the big screen is the best-selling romance novel, The Love Hypothesis. Published in 2021 by Berkley Books, Ali Hazelwood’s novel has taken the romance genre by storm. According to Deadline, Hazelwood confirmed that she had originally started writing the novel as a Star Wars fanfiction based on the two characters: Rey and Kylo Ren. All of the characters in The Love Hypothesis are based on Star Wars characters.
Casting The Characters
According to Deadline, casting for the film began in mid-July 2025. It has been announced via Deadline that Lili Reinhart has been cast as the leading lady, PhD candidate, Olive Smith. Reinhart will also be an executive producer of the film. She shared the news on Instagram with a selfie. Reinhart is known for her roles in the CW series Riverdale and the 2022 film Look Both Ways. According to People magazine, Reinhart also posted the announcement on TikTok, saying she was “looking for a book that could be turned into a really good romantic comedy that I could possibly be the lead of.” Tom Bateman (Murder on the Orient Express) was announced as the leading male role of Dr. Adam Carlsen. The cast also includes Rachel March, Nicholas Duvernau, Jaboukie Young-White, and Arty Froushan.
Who Is Behind The Production?
The Love Hypothesis will be directed by Claire Scanlon, known for her work on the 2018 Netflix rom-com Set It Up. According to People Magazine, Scanlon also directed the 2022 film The People We Hate at the Wedding, along with a few episodes of ABC’s sitcom Abbott Elementary. The script of the film will be written by Sarah Rothschild, known for her work on The Sleepover. Hazelwood and Reinhart will be joined by Elizabeth Cantillon and Catherine Hagedorn as producers for the film. Amazon, MGM, and MRC Studios will produce the film adaptation.
What Is The Love Hypothesis About?
While there is no news yet on a release date for the film, the romantic comedy book-to-film adaptation will follow the plot of Hazelwood’s best-selling novel of the same name. The novel follows a third-year PhD candidate at Stanford University, Olive, who tries to convince her best friend, Anh, that her dating life is good, which means she has to pretend to date her biology professor, Dr. Adam J. Carlsen. Ali Hazelwood has multiple books under her belt, including Check & Mate, Bride, Love on the Brain, Love Theoretically, Deep End, and Problematic Summer Romance.
