Dog POV Horror Movie ‘Good Boy’ to Get Theatrical Release

Creatures and Canines Abound

The independent film Good Boy is retrieving an extended release. Directed by Ben Leonberg, the film is receiving a larger theatrical release after the trailer garnered millions of views within its first few days online.

Ghosts and Ghouls

Good Boy follows Indy, the real-life dog of writer Leonberg, as the protagonist who tries to warn his owner, Todd (Shane Jensen), of the evil supernatural forces residing in their house. The official synopsis from IFC Films is, “A loyal dog moves to a rural family home with his owner, Todd, only to discover supernatural forces lurking in the shadows. As dark entities threaten his human companion, the brave pup must fight to protect the one he loves most.” The film is Leonberg’s directorial debut with a script he co-wrote alongside Alex Cannon. Alongside the titular good boy are indie horror actors such as Larry Fessenden, Arielle Friedman, Anya Crawcheck, and Stuart Rudin.

The Independent Film Company’s original plan was to bring the film to limited/select theatres, according to Entertainment Weekly. However, following the social media surge regarding the film, it is now receiving a nationwide theatrical release from IFC. The film originally premiered at SXSW, holding a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 20 reviews.

Dog in Danger

The trailer for the film blew up, garnering over 2 million views, and prompted a social media storm regarding the fate of the dog. The virality of the trailer, plus the frenzy of concern for Indy by individuals online, led to a huge spike in Google searches for the film. Google prompts such as “Does the dog in Good Boy die?” jumped by over 2,000% according to IndieWire.
