The Body Politic (2024) Official Film Trailer

Scott vs Crime

The Body Politic is a political documentary about Baltimore, Maryland Mayor Brandon Scott, who was elected during the George Floyd protests. Despite backlash, Scott desires a city with decreased crime and proposes a violence-reduction strategy.

Trailer

The trailer opens with text that informs viewers of the crime rates in Baltimore, with an average of 300 murders per year for the past 30 years. Clips of a young black child, police cars with flashing lights, cops cuffing citizens, and protesters marching can be seen as Brandon Scott’s voice narrates the violence that goes on within the city. He recalls how in the ‘80s and ‘90s, cops would arrest innocent citizens solely because they were black and how currently one can’t go anywhere in Baltimore without seeing the results of gun violence. Despite his desire for a more peaceful solution to end mass crime, the Governor believes defunding the police – who have statistically and systematically targeted and even killed black individuals – in order to use healthier, safer means is “radical, far-left lunacy.” However, despite being met with opposition, many Baltimore citizens rally behind Scott as he tries to make a difference.

Plot

Based on a true story, the documentary The Body Politic follows Brandon Scott, the Mayor of Baltimore, Maryland who was elected during the protests after the murder of George Floyd. After decades of Baltimore having an exceedingly high crime rate, Scott uses his election as mayor to work toward his goal of decreasing crime by implementing a violence-reduction strategy. Instead of relying solely on the police and prison system, which he believes has been overdone, Scott wants to use a city-wide public health focused strategy to lower murder rates. However, his idealistic approach is challenged when met with opposition.

The cast for the film currently lists four members: Erricka Bridgeford, Shantay Jackson, Dante Johnson, and Brandon Scott. Gabriel Francis Paz directed, produced, and did cinematography; John Benam produced and did cinematography; Dwane Langford produced; Thomas Niles edited; and Caleb Stine composed the musical score. The Body Politic is a co-production with ITVS and a co-presentation with Black Public Media (BPM).
