A24 Won The Bidding War and Bought Rights To ‘The Brutalist’

A24 Secures New Distribution from Venice Film Festival

A24 has successfully secured the U.S. distribution rights to Brady Corbet’s acclaimed film The Brutalist, which made a splash at the Venice Film Festival. The deal, arranged through CAA Media Finance, was revealed on Sunday, just before the film is set to have its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10.

The Acquiring

The Brutalist is a sweeping historical epic directed by Brady Corbet, featuring an all-star cast including Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce. The 215-minute film, which even includes an intermission, first premiered to widespread acclaim at the Venice Film Festival before being showcased to potential buyers at the Toronto Film Festival.

According to Variety, the film sparked a fierce bidding war after receiving a prolonged 12-minute standing ovation at Venice, where Corbet was honored with the Silver Lion award for Best Director. Numerous companies vied for the rights, but A24 ultimately triumphed, reportedly securing the deal for just under $10 million, as brokered by CAA Media Finance. The distribution deal was highly competitive, reflecting the buzz surrounding The Brutalist and Corbet’s growing reputation as a visionary filmmaker. Though A24 has yet to comment on the acquisition, the excitement surrounding the film’s U.S. release is palpable as the studio prepares to bring this monumental story to American audiences.

The Plot and Acclaim

Adrien Brody takes on the lead role in The Brutalist as László Tóth, a Hungarian-Jewish architect of the brutalist movement who survives the horrors of World War II and migrates to the United States with dreams of rebuilding his life and career. Struggling in poverty at first, Tóth’s fortunes change when he is hired by a wealthy and enigmatic client, Harrison Lee Van Buren (played by Guy Pearce), marking a turning point that will shape the next 30 years of his life. Felicity Jones portrays his supportive wife, Erzsébet, while Joe Alwyn plays the unpredictable son of Van Buren. The film features an ensemble cast including Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin, Emma Laird, Isaach De Bankolé, and Alessandro Nivola.

According to The Hollywood Reporter co-written by Corbet and his wife, Norwegian filmmaker and actress Mona Fastvold, The Brutalist faced multiple challenges throughout its seven-year production, with financial hurdles and false starts delaying the project. Corbet’s dedication to authenticity saw the film shot on 70mm film stock using the mid-century retro VistaVision format, requiring the shipment of 26 reels, totaling over 300 pounds, to Italy for its Venice Film Festival premiere. The painstaking effort paid off, as The Brutalist dazzled the Venice crowd, receiving glowing reviews and earning Corbet the prestigious Silver Lion award for Best Director.
