Amazon’s ‘Cross’ Trailer Released

Alex Cross’ Hunt For A Killer Is On

Already renewed for Season 2, Cross may be the first successful visual adaptation of James Patterson’s Alex Cross series if all goes well. Starring Aldis Hodge (Underground) as Alex Cross, the trailer sees Hodge hot on the trail of a killer.

A Crime Thriller

After three unsuccessful film adaptations, it was only a matter of time until Patterson’s Alex Cross came to life on the small screen. Amazon Prime Video released the first full-length trailer for the highly anticipated up-and-coming eight-episode Cross series. As shown in the trailer, the series follows detective and forensic psychologist Alex Cross as he hunts down a killer that has put him in his crosshairs.

Created by Ben Watkins (Burn Notice), the series is directed by Craig Siebels (The Gifted), Stacey Muhammad (Harlem), and Nzingha Stewart (Daisy Jones & The Six). Patterson, Watkins, Sam Ernst (Daredevil), Jim Dunn (Daredevil), Sibels, Bill Robinson (The Postcard Killings), Patrick Santa, David Ellison (Terminator Zero), Dana Goldberg (Terminator Zero), and Matt Thunnel (Stranger Things) are executive producers on the series. Hodge stars as the titular character along with being a producer. The series also stars Isaiah Mustafa (It Chapter Two), Juanita Jennings (What Women Want), Alona Tal (Broken City), Samantha Walkes (Orphan: First Kill), Caleb Elijah (True Story), Melody Hurd (Fatherhood), Jennifer Wigmore (Malory Towers), Eloise Mumford (The Right Stuff) and Ryan Eggold (New Amsterdam).

A More Faithful Adaptation

Alex Cross has been iconic since he first appeared in the 1993 book Along Came a Spider. The star of 32 Patterson novels, his story has spanned 30 years. This is not the first time companies have adapted Patterson’s work. Along Came a Spider and its sequel Kiss the Girls were adapted into films starring Morgan Freeman (Se7en) in 2001 and 1997 respectively. Another movie based on Patterson’s 2006 novel Cross was released in 2012 starring Tyler Perry (Gone Girl) titled Alex Cross. All three films were met with poor box-office results, causing the discussed sequel to Alex Cross, Double Cross, to be canceled.

Creator Watkins was not going to let what happened to those films happen to the TV adaptation. He would make this series far more faithful to the book series than the movies did. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Watkins explained, “When I started down the rabbit hole of reading the books and I rewatched the films, I was making a list of the things that I felt like the films hadn’t done justice to.” Watkins further explained, “If you’ve only watched the movies, you wouldn’t know [about Sampson]. Then you get into the books and you’re like, ‘This relationship is so layered and so rewarding and so nuanced and comforting.’ They’re inseparable, and you know you can count on that. I knew that that was one of the things we were going to have to channel for the show.”

The first season of Cross will be released on Prime Video on November 14 all at once.
