‘Arcane’: The Top 5 Episodes of Season 1

Three Years Later

After premiering in 2021, Arcane was an immediate success with most audiences. The show would also win four of its five Primetime Emmy nominations. The show has a lot going for it, and fans are hoping the magic will extend to Season 2, which premieres on November 9.

The series is based on the popular video game League of Legends. The game’s publisher, Riot Games, enlisted an animation studio called Fortiche to produce promotional music videos based on the game. Blown away by the quality, Riot Games, in its pursuit of branching out to other forms of media, decided to proceed with a television series, enlisting Fortiche for help with the effort. For most people seeing the show for the first time, the first thing that jumps off the screen is the exquisite animation. This is the fruit of Fortiche’s meticulous nature, as the nine episodes from the first season took six years to create. Beware of Spoilers!

5. S1.E6 “When These Walls Come Tumbling Down”

Arcane isn’t just another “pretty face” to look at. As enticing as the animation is, the series is an achievement in just about every aspect of what makes a TV show great. The main characters are relatable as children, but the show uses a time-lapse of about seven years to help solidify and strengthen the development of these characters. However, viewers quickly learn that the Arcane writing team doesn’t need to rely heavily on such narrative techniques as the show is filled with well-thought-out characters introduced later. The series also features a plot and storyline that was masterfully crafted and expertly layered. “When These Walls Come Tumbling Down” features Jinx and her long-lost sister Vi (presumed to be dead) reunited for the first time in nearly a decade. Such powerful moments can lose their effect when they’re rushed or lack foresight and build-up. Arcane delivers this important milestone with pitch-perfect accuracy. The episode also shows a morally torn Jayce who finds himself ousting his mentor in an effort to advance necessary personal interests.

Two of the show’s four Emmy wins belong to “When These Walls Come Tumbling Down.” The episode won for Oustanding Animated Program and Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation – the latter of which recognized background designer Bruno Couchinho’s efforts. In addition, the episode saw a third Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation. However, the episode ended up losing to a 2022 episode of Barry, entitled “Starting Now.”

4. S1.E8 “Oil and Water”

“Oil and Water” serves as the proverbial calm before the storm. Using tension and a captivating story that continues to twist and turn, the episode sets the table well for the thrilling season finale. In yet another nod to the meticulous writing utilized in the show, Mel Medarda’s mother, Ambessa Medarda, appears unannounced and commands the screen each time she’s featured. In previous episodes, Mel had made mention of her family, especially her mother, and cited them as the reason for her departure from her hometown. We discover that Ambessa values strength and power above all, which becomes the centerpiece of the show’s trajectory going into the second season, “A wolf has no mercy.”

Ambessa’s presence fuels Jayce as he’s been deciding how active a role he’d like to play in Piltover’s next maneuvers and how far he’s willing to go to see them through. The episode shows a team-up between him and Vi, who’s also well past half-measures. An accident occurs during their mission, which depicts the ugly side of the force that Jayce has been sheltered from his entire life. The questionable and shaky relationship between Silco and Jinx is on display throughout the first season. It isn’t until Episode 8 that audiences are shown how deeply Silco cares for Jinx and that he’s even capable of such feelings. A brief yet promising moment in the episode serves as a silver lining to all the trends of gloom when Professor Heimerdinger comes across a wounded Ekko. These strange bedfellows could help provide peace to a region on the brink of disaster.

3. S1.E7 “The Boy Savior”

Although there is plenty to enjoy about Arcane on its surface, the show is also crafted to tell a story with subtleties. In “The Boy Savior,” Vi is reunited with Ekko, who helps catch her up to speed with how much things have changed since she’s been away. There’s a point where Vi is attempting to convince Ekko that Powder (now Jinx) can be reached and isn’t past redemption.

In a somewhat defeated manner, Ekko assures Vi that it can’t be done. In one fell swoop, a single scene is able to demonstrate how much the characters have changed over the years while cementing even further the bond that Vi and Jinx share. To everyone else, Jinx is too far gone, but Vi wholeheartedly believes the relationship with her sister, whom she loved and cared for dearly, can still be salvaged. In Jinx’s rare tender moments, even she longs for this bond to return.

To conclude the episode, Ekko and Jinx face off in a gripping and emotional duel to the death. When the two square off, Jinx taunts him, saying, “Oh, look who it is. The boy Savior.” Jinx’s words and Ekko’s regretful sigh all but confirm to viewers that Ekko indeed tried to get through to Jinx at some point. Some of the most heartwrenching moments in the show derive from the difficulty of discerning the older characters from their younger, child-like selves, and this fight scene plays on that angle to perfection. The episode went on to win a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation.

2. S1.E3 “The Base Violence Necessary for Change”

Episode 3 of Season 1 is the final episode before the narrative time lapse occurs and does a tremendous job setting the tone for the rest of the series. Quickly, the children of the Undercity are forced to grow up while kids in Piltover can go through their whole childhood without knowing violence, desperation, or loss. In another subtle plot point, a recent revolution took the lives of Vi and Powder’s parents. Afterward, they are raised and mentored by the most respected person in the Undercity, Vander. Extreme violence and loss taught Vander the value of peace. Despite his strength and devout following, he did everything in his power to keep tensions from spilling over. This would include turning himself in to be imprisoned. His leadership was well-demonstrated during his brief screentime.

After Vander is captured by a rival gang, Vi assembles her crew of young misfits to rescue him. Vi forces Powder to stay behind, citing the dangerous nature of the mission and Powder’s limitations that the rest of the crew often compensates for. Despite the perilous opposition, Vi and her team reach the cusp of success. However, in an attempt to prove her worth, Powder secretly accompanies the crew and unknowingly causes the death of two friends. A mortally wounded Vander escapes with Vi and implores her to reach safety. His dying words to Vi ended up being, “Take care of Powder.” Overcome with emotion, Vi takes her frustration and grief out on Powder, going as far as to call her a jinx, before leaving her behind. This pivotal moment birthed one of the most ruthless and complex characters in storytelling.

1. S1.E9 “The Monster You Created”

Whereas most TV shows would increase the runtime for a season finale, Arcane’s production proves efficient, with a compelling conclusion that coincides with the typical length of previous episodes. “The Monster You Created” was heavily recognized by the Annie Awards, accounting for three of the show’s nine wins. The episode won Outstanding Achievement for Character Animation in a Television/Media Production, Outstanding Achievement for Directing in an Animated Television/Media Production, and Outstanding Achievement for Writing in an Animated Television/Media Production. The effort received further recognition and a nomination from the Hugo Awards for Best Dramatic Presentation – Short Form. The praise for the episode can’t be overstated. The finale bore the responsibility of completing existing storylines while creating intrigue and cliffhangers for what’s to come. In flawless execution, the episode was delivered.

After teaming up with Vi, Jayce realizes the horrors associated with battle and solidifies his decision to petition for peace. Jayce and his love interest Mel independently arrive at the same conclusion, but Mel finally stands up to her mother and demands that she leave Piltover. In this exchange, audiences are treated to more background of the Medarda family and the real reason Mel was sent away. In a fleeting, vulnerable moment, Mel’s mother admits, “You weakened me,” regarding the compassion felt for Mel. After a brutal fight between Vi and Sevika, Jinx captures Vi in an attempt to find the truth in her intentions. Although Jinx’s derangement is on display throughout the season, the finale gives an in-depth look at her daily internal struggles and how they guide her erratic behavior. A climactic struggle sees Silco die at the hands of Jinx, which pushes her further into chaos. Next season, fans will watch the fallout of Savika taking Silco’s mantle, Ekko and Heimerdinger collaborating, and Jinx launching a Hextech-powered attack on Piltover that will negate the peace voted on by the council.
