Saints and Sinners Never Lie
Black Bag is a thrilling, alluring mystery filled with mind games. The 2025 film was directed by Steven Soderbergh, produced by Casey Silver and Greg Jacobs, and distributed by Focus Features LLC. In Black Bag, everyone is guilty of something. The only catch is that there’s only so much time before everything and every one is found out.
What’s Severus?
The plot for Black Bag is one of twists and turns. The film revolves around the marriage of George and Kathryn. Their marriage is strong with trustworthiness as the most crucial aspect. Both work for The National Cyber Security Centre or NCSC for short. The film attempts to explain the mystery of the inner betrayal of the ones closest. It can sometimes be impossible to understand a person’s motives because they aren’t always apparent in their actions or words. Maybe people do things for power, love, or money. Each person has their own story and through time those stories are revealed in unexpected ways. George is given a mission, but complications arise and he must adjust in the best way he can. He comes up with a plan that sets things in motion.
As conflicts arise in the film some elements are hidden, however they can be found in the details. The characters’ interactions with one another are most important. As they all work together, everyone is suspicious of one another. Somehow, a few select people have found their way into the lion’s den and they all must fight for their lives. At times, one person’s survival may end up being at the expense of another. Tension is what drives Black Bag. There isn’t a moment to rest, and even less time to take a breath.
The Ends Always Justify The Means
George (Michael Fassbender) has the mind of a genius, but so does his wife Kathryn St. Jean (Cate Blanchett). While George is methodical, tactical, and precautious, Kathryn is invincible. She knows what she wants and has no problem getting it for herself. Their relationship is full of love, loyalty, and strength. This bond makes them who they are, for better or worse. As actors, they can share a chemistry that comes through in the roles they play.
There are four main characters whose individual stories are integral to the film. Dr. Zoe Vaughan (Naomie Harris) holds herself to a standard that she can never really fulfill. She is a woman of many words and yet she never speaks them. In this role, there is a sense of stoic integrity brought to express her true nature. James Stokes (Regé -Jean Page) is a man of many talents with an ego that gets him into more trouble than he can handle, and it may cost him. He dives into this role with a harsh temperament and set of mind. Clarissa Dubose (Marisa Abela) can be one for trouble, but she’s never to be underestimated in what she can do. In this film, she is seen as a tragic tale when it comes to love but is never to be underestimated.
She brings a sense of entitlement to her role to claim her place among others. Freddie Smalls (Tom Burke) is a harsh man, but this role calls for a sort of hamster wheel mentality as he repeats destructive behaviors. He comes in being bold but also unrestrained. Finally, Arthur Stieglitz (Pierce Brosnan) is a man of secrets who believes he has complete control in the palm of his hands until it slips away without a trace of ever having been there to begin with. An aura of magnificence and unquestioned beliefs in this role is what makes him unforgettable.
High Class, High Valued
One thing to note in Black Bag is the locations where most of the film is set in London, the place MI6 is located. Many are familiar with who they are and what they do, but much of that comes from films like James Bond and Mission Impossible films. It’s due to this type of atmosphere that audiences feel the intensity of the missions. It becomes a tone, mood, and aesthetic. The atmosphere of the film always keeps the audience in tune with the characters and how they’re spun into a web of stitched secrets. Everything designed in this film comes with a purpose: the clothes, the food, and even the cars all come with an intention. These are high-class operations and they make it known that these agents are not to be messed with.
The Black Bag (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) was created by the Northern Irish composer David Holmes. In simply comparing the titles of each song with different scenes in the film, it’s possible to see the elevation within those tracks. Then comes the experience of listening to the soundtrack. The melodies that play are soft sounds mixed with moments of density. There’s a feeling of surrendering to the moment when all else fades away while knowing at the same time the danger that is to come. Holmes has created a riveting and perfect musical pair that fits the film’s mind-bending mystery.
Sense and Sensibility
When it comes to spy films and novels, many things can be expected. All in all, it’s the thrill of the journey and the achievement of something great. Black Bag introduces a new world that many wouldn’t seek to explore, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be exceptional.
