‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ (2024): A Review

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) Official Marvel Studios Trailer

The Epic Adventure Of Two Underdogs

Deadpool & Wolverine is a 2024 superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios. It features the comic book characters Deadpool and Wolverine in an explosive team-up that makes for an epic watch. Deadpool and Wolverine work together to save Deadpool’s universe from destruction by the Time Variance Authority. The two characters merge worlds after Marvel acquired the studio 20th Century Fox, which owned Deadpool and the characters from the X-Men

The Plot That Saved The Universe

The 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine is a direct sequel to the first two films, Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018). As this film is the first Deadpool movie made by Marvel Studios, marking the MCU’s first rated R film, it chose to go a slightly different direction than initially intended when 20th Century Fox was producing the major motion picture. The movie’s narrative is enjoyable to watch, as the film has many humorous moments. Deadpool’s plot line is in jeopardy, so he labels himself “Marvel Jesus” as he sets out to reprise his timeline. This comical element alone, the perfect example of genius writing, is incredible and worth the two-and-a-half-hour run time. However, for first-time viewers or those who hadn’t seen the last Deadpool 2 (2018) movie for a while, the narrative arc had a bit of a time jump from where the second film left off. As a refresher, 10 to 20 minutes are used at the beginning to explain Deadpool’s dream of becoming an Avenger and to jump-start the time-travel/multiverse storyline of Deadpool & Wolverine, which brings back some fan-favorite characters, including Happy Hogan. The movie quickly transitions into the present day, where Deadpool and Wolverine travel into the Void to save the universe in Deadpool’s timeline. Overall, the diegesis is exciting and intriguing to watch, leaving viewers at the edge of their seats and wondering if Deadpool can accomplish his goal of keeping his universe from being wiped from existence. The epic fight scenes between the superheroes and villains and hilarious character conversations kept the film from going flat.

A Dynamic Duo

After buying out 20th Century Fox and acquiring the rights to Deadpool and X-Men, Marvel decided to combine the franchises into one epic movie, Deadpool & Wolverine. The two films’s namesake characters, Deadpool and Wolverine, are played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, respectively. Ryan Reynolds continues to be the best fit as Deadpool. He has a comedic approach to the character, which is true to Deadpool in cartoons and comics which the movies are based on. Reynolds’s acting when Deadpool is searching for Wolverine is one of the funniest montages, insulting the different universe’s Wolverines and throwing out snarky comments left and right. Hugh Jackman as Wolverine remains a fantastic choice, welcoming him into the role he left behind years ago. Jackman acts as if he is grumpy and holds the world’s weight on his shoulders, making Wolverine the perfect juxtaposition to Deadpool. Jackman and Reynolds are a dynamic duo throughout the film with sibling-like fighting, fists and Wolverine claws, bantering, and inappropriate but funny comments.

Reynolds uses his character to break the fourth wall many times during the movie, using the opening scene to explain what has happened in the last few years after Deadpool 2 (2018) while talking to audiences directly. But the most exciting casting was that of Chris Evans, known for his work as Steve Rodgers/Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who appears in Deadpool & Wolverine as Johnny Storm/Human Torch from the Fantastic Four films. Marvel decided to use the Void universe in the movie to bring back some well-known characters like Johnny Storm.

The Soundtrack And Fight Scenes

The Deadpool franchise is known for using music during fight sequences. During the opening scene, which was part dance and part fight, Deadpool grooved and fought to the iconic “Bye Bye Bye” by NSYNC. This song choice is strange and wild but intrigues and entices the viewers to keep watching. The filming and editing of the opening credit scene are fantastic, making it that much more enjoyable to watch. As Deadpool fights from different angles, the casting, crew, and production credits, along with the film title, crash and pop onto the screen. It’s the perfect example of the movie’s exquisite editing and writing.

The film’s soundtrack is fun and comical; for example, when a worker at the Time Variance Authority sees Deadpool, the song “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls plays, which then becomes an ongoing joke throughout the movie and whenever the two see each other, “Iris” plays in the background. Different songs like “Glamourous” by Fergie, “I’m with You” by Avril Lavigne, and “Make Me Lose Control” by Eric Carmen play during scenes throughout Deadpool & Wolverine, adding an engaging element to the overall narrative. The fight scenes are also excellent and very violent for a Marvel Studios film, including (but certainly not limited to) the end fight sequence with all the superheroes and villains. But what makes the fight scenes so great, especially the ones shot in the void, is the impressive camera angles that allow audiences to see all the superheroes fighting all the villains.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, Deadpool & Wolverine are worth seeing in theaters, especially in 3D. The casting and filming are some of the best that Marvel has done in a long time. The music is also a great experience for audiences to enjoy while watching the film. After the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, fans are hopeful that Marvel will make a fourth Deadpool installment.
