Equal Play (2024) Official Trailer Courtesy of the Paralympics and Harder Thank You Think Productions

Harder Than You Think Productions Continues To Inspire Children

While gearing up for the 2024 Paris Paralympics, UK content group, Harder Than You Think Productions (HTYTP), released the trailer for Equal Play, a new short film dedicated to inspiring disabled children into getting into athletics. The film is scheduled to debut on August 26 on Channel 4, two days before the start of the Paralympic games.

The Short Film ‘Equal Play’

Also known for the short film The Space Between You and Me, director Lily Ahree Siegel’s newest nonfictional project will star Paralympian Hannah Cockcroft as she interacts with two disabled teenagers Marley and Tammy whose lives are changed forever when given proper access to sports. The trailer dropped on August 22 on the official Paralympics YouTube page and has already premiered at the second edition of the Uninterrupted Film Festival in LA (the Lebron James-owned festival celebrating athletic stories), winning its audience award. Filled with vibrant graphics, gorgeous natural lighting, and a prominent use of narration, the trailer encapsulates the exciting achievements that Marley and Tammy go through.

The film was developed according to the FWD-DOC disability guidelines along with the guidance of Disability Consultant Lindsey Dryden. Disability Arts Online, D&I, and DANC also helped out on the project, ensuring that the representation and message of the short film not only kicked off the Paralympics’ hype but also impacted worldwide viewers, more importantly. According to an August 22, 2024 article from Deadline, the film, “…was made in collaboration with ParalympicsGB, with 45% of the shooting crew and heads of departments across the entire production identified as disabled.”

Representation in Film

Though the Paralympics are a huge worldwide event that occurs every four years, the societal issues of everyday life have lingered. Even countries that hold accessibility laws are not holding on to their promises to help their disabled citizens. Paralympian champion Cockroft told Deadline, “Ten years on, disabled children are sitting on the sidelines when para-athletes are now household names in the UK. Awareness and acceptance of Para-sports are growing, and yet currently, thousands of disabled children are missing out on the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity. I hope our documentary Equal Play raises awareness of the necessity for equal access to school sports for all disabled children.”

Equal Play will be debuting on Channel 4 on August 26, 2024. Until then, fans can stay tuned in to more upcoming Paralympics content through their official YouTube channel. The Paralympics will be held from August 28 to September 8.
